A key National League West battle begins on Monday, September 7, 2020, when the Colorado Rockies (20-20) visit the San Diego Padres (25-17) to begin a three-game series. The San Diego Padres sit in second place and trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by five games. Colorado sits in third place and are four games back of these Padres. This game will air live on FS1 at 9:10 p.m. EST.
Over the weekend the Colorado Rockies traveled to Los Angeles and took two of three from the Dodgers. Los Angeles won game one 10-6, but the Rockies fought back for a 5-2 win on Saturday and a 7-6 win on Sunday. Matt Kemp hit a big go ahead two run home run in the top of the eighth to guide the Rockies to the win Sunday.
San Diego visited the Oakland Athletics over the weekend and, like Colorado, won two of the three games. The Padres shut out Oakland in a 7-0 win on Friday, but Oakland came back and won game two 8-4. On Sunday, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his major league leading 15th home run, tied with Mike Trout, and the Padres came away with a 5-3 win.
Below is my pick for the Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres. All odds are from DraftKings Sportsbook.
Colorado Rockies (+165) at San Diego Padres (-200)
Pitching Matchup: Kyle Freeland (2-1, 4.09 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) vs Dinelson Lamet (2-1, 2.62 ERA, 0.94 WHIP)
Kyle Freeland has been fine this season, but the Rockies need him to be great if they are going to grab one of the two Wild Card spots. Freeland has made eight starts this season and, in his first six, he did not allow more than three earned runs in any start. In his two most recent starts, Freeland has given up four earned runs in each start. For the season Freeland has given up 20 earned runs and 51 hits in 44 innings pitched.
Dinelson Lamet has had a great season so far, but his last two starts have been his worst of 2020.In his first six starts, Lamet did not allow more than two earned runs in any starts, but in his last two he has allowed three earned runs in each. For the season Lamet has given up 27 hits and 14 runs (13 earned) in 44.2 innings pitched.
Colorado has been a middle of the pack offense in 2020 as they have a .261 batting average, .324 on base percentage, .426 slugging, and a .750 OPS. The Rockies have hit 50 home runs and 191 RBI’s in 40 games.
San Diego has been the best offense in baseball this season as they have a .263 batting average, .338 on base percentage, .484 slugging, and an .822 OPS. The Padres have been mashing all season as they have 74 home runs and 231 RBI’s in 42 games played.
