A National League West showdown begins on Monday, August 24, 2020, when the Colorado Rockies (13-15) visit the Arizona Diamondbacks (13-16) for game one of a four game series. Both teams are in a downward spiral and occupy the final two spots in the NL West standings. This game will air live on ESPN at 9:30 p.m. EST.
Colorado has now lost seven games in a row and are coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lost Angeles won game one 5-1, game two 6-2, and then blew Colorado out, 11-3, for the sweep. The Rockies pitching staff has been a major issue as they have given up 10+ runs in three of their last five games.
Arizona is right with Colorado in the pit of misery as the Diamondbacks have lost five games in a row and are coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants. The Diamondbacks lost 6-2, 5-1, 6-1, and cannot get the bats going. Arizona has scored two runs or less in five straight games.
Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks. All odds are from SugarHouse Sportsbook.
Betting Odds: Colorado Rockies (+145) at Arizona Diamondbacks (-167)
Pitching Matchup: Ryan Castellani (0-1, 3.77 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) vs Merrill Kelly (3-2, 2.59 ERA, 0.99 WHIP)
Ryan Castellani is ready for his fourth start of the season and will look to rebound form a poor last start. Castellani came out of the gate firing as he allowed just two hits and one earned run in his first two starts. However, Castellani came back to reality in his last start as the Houston Astros lit him up for eight hits and five earned runs in just 5.2 innings pitched.
Merrill Kelly prepared for his sixth start of 2020 and will look to bounce back from his worst start of the season. Kelly gave up just five combined earned runs in his first four starts but gave up four earned runs in his most recent start against Oakland. Kelly is still having a great season and will look to get back his early season success Monday night.
Lost in the Rockies downslide is how good of a season right fielder Charlie Blackmon is amid. Blackmon is batting an incredible .405, has 45 hits, 24 RBI’s, and a remarkable .442 on base percentage. The only major offensive category Blackmon does not lead is home runs, shortstop Trevor Story has eight.
The Diamondbacks are spreading out the offensive love this season and four players lead the five major offensive categories. Second baseman Ketel Marte leads the team with a .336 batting average and 38 hits, right fielder Kole Calhoun has a team high seven home runs, and left fielder is powering the way with 20 RBI’s. Center fielder Starling Marte leads Arizona with a .402 on base percentage.
Free MLB Picks: I like the Arizona Diamondbacks to end their long losing streak Monday night.
