The Cleveland Indians (44-36) take on the Baltimore Orioles (22-58) tonight it the first game of a three-game series. Mike Clevinger (1-1 2.70 ERA) of the Indians makes his return from the IL for the second time this year and will go up against John Means (6-4 2.67 ERA) of the Orioles.
Clevinger was expected to have a big year this season but an upper back strain has caused him to must most of the year. Clevinger made two starts at the beginning of the season before landing on the IL. He went 12 combined innings against the Chicago White Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. Clevinger only allowed two hits in those two games and no runs. He also had 22 strikeouts. His first start back from the IL was June 17th, where he allowed five earned runs in 4 ⅔ innings against the Texas Rangers. Clevinger went back on the IL and tonight will be his first start back from his second stint.
Means has been about the only good thing going for the Orioles this season. Means has one of the 10 best ERAs in baseball among pitchers with at least 70 IP. He has allowed one earned run or less in 12 of his appearances this season (four of them out of the bullpen). In his only appearance against the Indians this season, Means allowed three earned runs in five innings.
Clevinger struggled in his last outing after coming off of the IL and that very well could happen again tonight. It is unknown if that upper back strain is still affecting his pitching. Regardless of Clevinger’s performance, I expect another strong outing from Means tonight. Both teams’ offenses have a hard time scoring, so this game should be low-scoring, covering the UNDER. I think Baltimore pulls the upset today as Clevinger has a hard time coming off the IL once again.
