Betting Odds: White Sox+166/Yankees-185

Total O/U: 9

After getting swept by the Houston Astros and then losing the first game of the series against the Chicago White Sox (4-9), the New York Yankees (6-8) responded with a 4-0 win yesterday to force a rubber match in today’s game. Carlos Rodon (1-2 3.38 ERA) will be getting the start for the Sox and will be going up against Masahiro Tanaka (1-0 1.47 ERA) of the Yankees.

Rodon has a respectable 3.38 ERA and 24 strikeouts in his three starts this season. However, Rodon has been up against some of the lesser offenses in the league, Tampa Bay (15th), Cleveland (26th), and Kansas City (17th). Now he will be going up against a Yankees offense on the road that hasn’t necessarily been the best offense in the league (11th) but is certainly capable of putting up double-digit runs any day, something that those other three teams really aren’t likely to do to often this season.

The same can be said about Tanaka and the competition that he has pitched against this season. Baltimore (15th), Detroit(30th), and Houston(20th) have struggled more offensively than Rodon’s opponents so far this year. With the way the White Sox have been offensively this year (19th), Tanaka should have no problem continuing his great start to the season.

If CC Sabathia can still one-hit the White Sox, Tanaka can certainly shut them down as well. The Yankees may be a little banged up, but their lineup is still a dangerous one to pitch against. Both pitchers should have fairly good games today, with neither one getting too beat up. The Yankees should be able to get a multiple run win here with ease, but I think the total will stay UNDER as Tanaka has another great game and Rodon pitches just good enough to keep the Sox in it until the bullpen comes in and lets the Yankees pull away.
