Chicago’s two teams begin a short two-game series at Wrigley Field today as the White Sox (34-36) take on the Cubs (39-32). Pitching for the White Sox will be Ivan Nova (3-5 6.28 ERA) and for the Cubs, Cole Hamels (6-2 2.98 ERA).

Nova’s season has been one of the most up and down seasons of any pitcher this season. With his ERA at 6.28, you would think he would be getting rocked day in and day out. Well, in five of Nova’s starts he has allowed just one earned run. However, only one of those starts was against an offense ranked in the top 20 in runs per game (New York Yankees). Seven of his remaining starts he allowed four or more earned runs, including two to Baltimore (T26th in runs per game) and one to Detroit (29th), Kansas City(25th), and Toronto (T26th).

Hamels has been having a far more consistent year, minus one start against the Houston Astros when he allowed six earned runs in just four innings. In his 14 starts this season, Hamels has allowed zero earned runs four times (including his last three), one earned run twice, two earned runs three times, and three earned runs three times.

Hamels’ offense competition this year has been significantly higher than that of Nova’s. Nova has only allowed 21 walks in 77 ⅓ innings but has a WHIP of 1.60, meaning he gives up a lot of hits. Against the Cubs 10th ranked offense, those hits are going to turn into runs. Hamel’s is currently on a 23 scoreless inning streak. That could end today, but against a White Sox 21st ranked offense, he shouldn’t give up too many runs. I like Hamels and the Cubs offense to both have solid games tonight as the Cubs take the first game of this Chicago mini-series.
