After losing the first game of the series, the Atlanta Braves (20-20) are going for the series win against the Arizona Diamondbacks (22-18). Max Fried (4-2 2.97 ERA) will be taking the mound for the Braves and will be up against Zack Godley (7.49 ERA) of the Diamondbacks.
Fried has been one of the Braves best pitchers this season and holds a WHIP of 1.09 with 34 strikeouts to eight walks. In his nine appearances this season (seven starts), Fried has only allowed more than two runs twice, including his last outing. His last start was against the Los Angeles Dodgers where he gave up four earned runs and was pulled in the second inning after taking a line drive off of his pitching hand (x-rays negative).
Godley has had a rough year, to say the least. Godley made six starts to the year and only put together one quality start. His two most recent appearances have been out of the bullpen, one for three innings where he allowed three earned runs and his most recent where he pitched one scoreless inning. Walks have been an issue for Godley (21 in 33 ⅔ innings) and are a big part of his 1.72 WHIP.
Godley hasn’t made a start since April 27th and his first one back probably won’t go very well. The Braves are 11th in the league in walks and with Godley’s command issues, they should be able to draw at least three off of him and run his pitch count up, forcing him from this game early. Fried’s making his next scheduled start after taking that hit off of his hand, so it appears everything is fine there. After getting roughed up by the Dodgers, Fried should be able to get back on track and have another quality outing against the Diamondbacks. The Braves should pick up the win in a somewhat low scoring game that covers the UNDER.
