Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies – MLB Odds, Preview & Prediction – 08/29/20

A key National League East battle continues Saturday, August 29, 2020, when the Atlanta Braves (18-13) visit the Philadelphia Phillies (13-14) in game two of a three-game series. Atlanta leads the National League East by two games over the Miami Marlins, but it is very tight all the way down the standings. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are three games back of Atlanta and Washington, currently in last place, are just five games back. This game will air live on FOX at 1:15 p.m. EST.

The Philadelphia Phillies won their fourth straight game with a 7-4 win in 11 innings. Philadelphia had a 4-1 lead over into the top of the sixth but, per usual, the Phillies bullpen blew a great start by Zach Wheeler and the teams needed extras to complete this one. Scott Kingery, who came on a pinch runner, blasted a walkoff three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th innings to win the game for the Phillies.

Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. All odds are from MGM Sportsbook.

Atlanta Braves (+107) at Philadelphia Phillies (-117)

Pitching Matchup: Josh Tomlin (1-1, 3.93 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) vs Zach Eflin (1-1, 5.12 ERA, 1.55 WHIP)

Josh Tomlin is set to make his 11th appearance of 2020, but just his third start. Tomlin has started the last two games and he has struggled a bit in not a lot of work. The righty has given up a combined 12 hits and six earned runs in just seven innings of combined work. Tomlin started the season with seven straight scoreless relief appearances but has since given up at least two earned runs in his last three appearances.

Zach Eflin heads to the mound for the fifth time in 2020 and he will look to rebound from a few mediocre starts. Eflin’s opening start of 2020 saw him give up four hits and two runs (zero earned) in four innings of work against the Yankees, but he has struggled a bit since. In his last three starts, Eflin has given up a combined 11 earned runs and 18 hits in just 15.1 innings of work.

Batting Stats:

First baseman Freddie Freeman has been his usual consistent self as he leads all eligible Braves players with a .308 batting average, .422 on base percentage, .570 slugging, and .992 OPS. Designated hitter Marcel Ozuna leads the team with eight home runs and 21 RBI’s.

Bryce Harper is having a MVP type season and if he can drag the Phillies to the playoffs he may just win in. The right fielder leads the team with a .302 batting average, .445 on base percentage, .605 slugging, and a 1.050 OPS. Catcher J.T. Realmuto leads the team with nine home runs and 25 RBI’s.

MLB Predictions: I am going to back the Atlanta Braves Saturday night.

2020 Picks Record: 35-23
