Two N.L. West teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks (42-42) and the San Francisco Giants (35-46), play their third game of a four-game series tonight after splitting the first two games. Zack Greinke (8-3 3.08 ERA) makes his 18th start of the year for the Diamondbacks and will face off against Drew Pomeranz (2-8 6.79 ERA) making his 15th start for the Giants.
Greinke is having a strong season, but his last two starts haven’t gone so well. He has given up nine earned runs in his last two starts, although it was against two top-seven offenses in Colorado and Los Angeles (Dodgers). Even with those rough performances, Greinke still has one of the best ERA and WHIP in baseball. It will be his first start of the season against the Giants 28th-ranked offense.
Pomeranz has been having the type of year you immediately want to forget about once the season is over. His inflated ERA is matched with an equally inflated WHIP (1.75). He has made 14 starts and only has 58 ⅓ innings pitched this season. While he does have 70 strikeouts, he also has 28 walks. Pomeranz has only pitched more than five innings in one outing this season. Even with his limited innings, Pomeranz has allowed 15 home runs. Pomeranz is 0-4 with an 8.53 ERA in 10 games (seven starts) against the Diamondbacks in his career.
Greinke’s last two starts have been a little bumpy, but I think he gets it figured out in this one. When a pitcher is slumping the best thing he can do is pitch against one of the worst offenses in the league to get some momentum going. Greinke should be able to put together one of his best performances of the season against the Giants. Pomeranz can’t seem to do anything right this season and against a ninth-ranked Arizona offense, his luck isn’t going to change much today. While I expect Arizona to cruise today, I don’t think we see too many runs in this one. I think the UNDER just barely covers as the Giants struggle to put more than one run on the board.
