The Arizona Diamondbacks (25-22) and the San Diego Padres (23-24) meet tonight for the first of a three-game series. Both teams will be looking to their young starters to turn their recent struggles around. Pitching for the Diamondbacks will be Luke Weaver (3-2 3.16 ERA) and for the Padres will be Rookie of the Year hopeful Chris Paddack (3-2 1.99 ERA).
Weaver has been solid all-around this season, but even better after his first three starts of the season. Weaver has allowed nine earned runs in his last six starts, in a total of 35 ⅔ innings. Weaver has 55 strikeouts in 51 ⅓ innings this season and holds a WHIP of 1.11. Weaver has been a nice addition for the Diamondbacks this season as part of the Paul Goldschmidt trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Paddack has been vocal about his desire to win Rookie of the Year. With the way he is pitching so far this season, he very well could be in the running. Paddack has the second-best WHIP (0.75) in baseball of pitchers with at least 45 innings pitched this season. In five of Paddack’s eight starts this season he has allowed one earned run or less.
These two pitchers faced each other back on April 12. The Padres won that game 2-1 and Weaver picked up the loss while Paddack got a no-decision. Weaver went 6 ⅓ innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out eight. Paddack only gave up three hits and one earned run in 5 ⅓ innings. I expect tonight to be a similar pitching duel like the last time these two faced each other. This time though, look for Paddack to go deeper into the game. This should be a low-scoring game, but the Padres at home with Paddack on the mound get the win in this one.
