The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies start a three-game series at Coors Field in Denver on Tuesday night, so here’s the best betting pick for their opening clash along with the latest odds update on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The Rockies opened as slight -114 moneyline favorites, while the Diamondbacks sit at +104 odds, as the bookies expect to see a tight clash between a couple of NL West foes. Both teams started the season with tough matchups against the divisional rivals and will look to right the ship in this series.
The D-backs upset the Padres for their first win in 2021
The Arizona Diamondbacks opened the 2021 MLB season with a four-game set at the San Diego Padres. Of course, the D-backs were massive underdogs, so it’s no surprise they lost the first three games of the series. Still, they bounced back in the closer last Sunday, outlasting the Padres 3-1 as +185 road dogs.
The Diamondbacks posted a .217 batting average (22nd in the MLB) and a .377 slugging percentage (16th) through their first four outings in 2021. On the other side of the ball, the D-backs were yielding exactly five runs per contest.
Luke Weaver will get the ball for Arizona on Tuesday, and the 27-year-old righty had a horrible 2020 season. He went 1-9 in 12 starts, posting a 6.58 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and a 55/18 K/BB ratio in 52 innings of work. Weaver is 1-2 with a terrible 7.40 ERA in five career starts and one relief app against the Rockies.
The Rockies look to stop a three-game slide
The Colorado Rockies opened the new season with a four-game home set against the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers. They beat the reigning champs on an Opening Day as +225 underdogs, 8-5, but the next three games saw the Dodgers dominating Colorado at Coors Field.
The Rockies have been pretty efficient in their first four games of the season, averaging 5.25 runs per game on a .222 batting average (17th) and a .422 slugging percentage (11th). Still, their pitching staff posted a 5.75 ERA even though the Dodgers smacked just a pair of home runs through four contests.
German Marquez will make his second start of the season after pitching four innings in an 8-5 victory over LA on an Opening Day. The 26-year-old right-hander allowed just one earned run on six hits and six walks. Marquez is 4-5 with a 4.24 ERA in 16 career starts and one relief appearance against the Diamondbacks.
- 6-14 in the last 20 games against the National League
- 1-5 in the last six outings as underdogs
The Rockies start their top ace here, and even though Marquez hasn’t been a true force at Coors Field over the last few years, he should help his team enough to see off Arizona’s challenge. I’ve mentioned Luke Weavers’ struggle in 2020, and I’m looking for more of the same in this one.
Last season, the Diamondbacks and Rockies split their 10-game series. Colorado seems like batting in a better form than Arizona at the start of the 2021 campaign, so I’m backing the hosts to win straight up.
Pick: Take Colorado Rockies at -114
I would go with the over on the totals, not only because this game will be played at Coors Field. Both teams have issues in their bullpen, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rockies hit really hard against Luke Weaver.
Four of the last five encounters between the D-backs and Rockies went in the over, producing 13 or more runs in total each. Also, the over is 5-2 in Colorado’s last seven games overall, while the under is 5-1 in Arizona’s previous six showings away from home.
Pick: Go over 11.0 runs at +100
