A mismatch in the National League West concludes Thursday, September 3, 2020, when the Arizona Diamondbacks (14-23) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (28-10) conclude their three-game series in LA. The Dodgers are the best team in baseball and lead the NL West by five games over the San Diego Padres. Arizona is at the bottom of the NL West and are 8.5 games back of the Padres. This game will air live on MLB Network at 9:30 p.m. EST.
The first two games of the series have been more entertaining than expected but were both won by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers won the first game 6-3, and it wasn’t that close, but needed a game tying home run in the bottom of the ninth, and a walkoff in the 10th, to come away with a 3-2 win.
Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers. All odds are from DraftKings Sportsbook.
Arizona Diamondbacks (+255) at Los Angeles Dodgers (-315)
Pitching Matchup: Luke Weaver (1-5, 8.23 ERA, 1.76 WHIP) vs Clayton Kershaw (4-1, 1.80 ERA, 0.77 WHIP)
Luke Weaver is set for his eighth start of the 2020 season and has performed better than what his ERA says. Weaver got roughed up in his first two starts of the season, giving up a combined 12 earned runs in just 7.1 innings, but has had better results since. Since those first two starts, Weaver has given up two earned runs or less in three of his five starts.
Clayton Kershaw is back to being the best pitcher of his generation as the lefty has been utterly dominant since a disappointing opening start. Kershaw gave up four runs and seven hits in just 4.1 innings of work on opening day but has rebounded how you would expect. Since his opening start, the lefty has given up a combined two runs and nine hits in 20.0 innings of work.
Arizona’s top offensive threat, Starling Marte, was traded to Miami on Monday, so the offensive leaders on this team is not pretty. Second baseman Ketel Marte leads the team with a .299 batting average and first baseman Christian Walker leads with a .342 on base percentage, .496 slugging, and .839 OPS. Walked also leads the team with 23 RBI’s, while right fielder Kole Calhoun leads with eight home runs.
The Dodgers stars have been performing well all season and that shows when you look at the stats. Shortstop Corey Seager leads the team with a .310 batting average and right fielder Mookie Betts leads with a .384 on base percentage, .619 slugging, and 1.002 OPS. Third baseman Justin Turner also has a .384 on base percentage. Betts also leads the Dodgers with 12 home runs and 27 RBI’s.
MLB Predictions: There is no value here, but I am backing the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday night.
