An interleague battle rolls on when the Arizona Diamondbacks (18-31) visit the Los Angeles Angels (20-29), on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, for game two of their three game series. Neither team is going to make the playoffs this season as the Angels are in fourth in the AL West and the Diamondbacks are dead last in the NL West. This game will air live on ESPN at 9:40 p.m. EST.
It was a wild game on in this series that ultimately saw the Diamondbacks come away with a 9-8 win. The Diamondbacks went out to a quick 7-0 lead, after the top of the third inning, but Los Angeles fought back to tie the game at the end of the sixth inning. Arizona took the lead back, and got the win, thanks to an eighth inning David Peralta solo home run.
Below is my pick for the Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Angels. All odds are from BetRivers Sportsbook.
Odds: Arizona Diamondbacks (+158) at Los Angeles Angels (-184)
Pitching Matchup: Caleb Smith (0-0, 3.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP) vs Dylan Bundy (5-2, 2.48 ERA, 0.91 WHIP)
Caleb Smith is set to make his third career start, and second with Arizona, as the rookie will look to start going deeper into games. Smith made his MLB debut back in late July, with Miami, when he allowed one hit and one earned run in three innings of work against the Phillies. Smith was traded to Arizona on trade deadline day and made his first start for the Diamondbacks last Friday, allowing one hit and one earned run in three innings of work against Seattle.
Dylan Bundy has been the lone bright spot on the mound for LA this season and he will look to finish off a strong 2020 in the next couple weeks. Bundy has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his nine starts this season, including four in a row. In his last four starts, Bundy has allowed a combined nine runs (seven earned) and 21 hits in 25.1 innings of work. For the season, Bundy has allowed 18 runs (16 earned) and 40 hits in 58.0 innings pitched.
The Diamondbacks have been abysmal this season at the plate as they are bottom eight in team batting average (.230), on base percentage (.303), slugging (.373), and OPS (.676). Arizona is tied for third fewest home runs, with 44, and the ninth fewest RBI’s, with 196.
Los Angeles has the 11th worst batting average (.242) in the majors, the ninth highest on base percentage (.332), are 15th in slugging (.422), and are 14th in OPS (.754). The Angels are ninth in the league with 69 home runs and have the sixth most RBI’s with 233.
MLB Picks: I am going to back Dylan Bundy and the Los Angeles Angels Wednesday night.
