Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars won the AFC South a season ago, and won a playoff game before falling to the eventual champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. This year, the expectations for the Jaguars are through the roof, as they enter the season as favorites to win their division once again. And they will look to start delivering on those expectations starting in Week 1 against the rival Colts.
For the Jags, putting pressure on Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will be the key to this Jaguars vs Colts contest. Richardson is making his first NFL start, and making sure he does not have a clean pocket to throw in will give the Jags plenty of opportunities to generate turnovers.
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts have made a habit of trying out new starting quarterbacks to start out each of the last few seasons. They will do so again this year, as top-five draft pick Anthony Richardson is set to start for them in Week 1 this year. Richardson will look to stat his career on the right foot here, but will need to overcome a Jaguars team that is expected to do great things in 2023.
How the Colts perform offensively will be what everyone is focused on in this game, especially with Jonathan Taylor not active to start the year. That will put more pressure on Richardson than usual, which is especially problematic against an opponent of Jacksonville’s caliber. But pressure creates diamonds, as they say, and this game represents a great chance for Richardson to do some developing as a professional quarterback.
