Indianapolis Colts Betting Preview
Last season’s Indianapolis Colts were a mess. They did not get an acceptable level of quarterback play from Matt Ryan, and Jonathan Taylor got hurt to make things even tougher on their offense. This year, the Colts will suit up new quarterbacks yet again, as they look to find an answer at the most important position on the football field.
Indianapolis is also hoping that a rookie quarterback that they drafted can turn into their future at that position starting this year. While they will lean heavily on Taylor to keep their offense moving in the right direction, the Colts will be in for another long year if their quarterback options can’t pick up key conversions on passing downs.

Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Samson Ebukam, Matt Gay, Gardner Minshew, Anthony Richardson
Key Departures: Stephon Gilmore, Bobby Okereke, Parris Campbell
The big story for the Colts going into this season is the addition of Anthony Richardson at quarterback. Richardson went fourth overall to the Colts in the NFL Draft, but we still have questions about his ability to deliver at this level after he played flat out poorly in the SEC last season. But the Colts are clearly trying to solve their quarterback problems after bringing in Richardson and Gardner Minshew, which is intriguing.
Concerning for the Colts is that they lost a couple of key defenders in the offseason in Stephon Gilmore and Bobby Okereke. Okereke finished 10th in the league in tackles last season, and being without him could be problematic for a Colts defense that gave up the most points in the AFC even with him in their huddle.
Indianapolis Colts Offensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 4.8 (T-29th) | 5.6 (15th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.3 (T-18th) | 5.1 (T-1st) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 6.4 (T-27th) | 6.9 (21st) |
Points Per Game | 17.0 (T-30th) | 26.5 (8th) |
Turnovers | 34 (32nd) | 19 (T-8th) |
Offensively, the Colts were a disaster in 2022, as they were a bottom-three team in scoring. They also turned the ball over more than any team in the league, with 20 of their 34 turnovers coming via interceptions. Indy will hope that their newly acquired quarterbacks can cut back on those turnovers to give them a chance to be more productive, while the return of Taylor should have a positive impact on their running game.

It is hard to fairly judge the Indianapolis Colts on defense last season. They were actually above average in yards per play statistics on that side of the ball. But they gave up a ton of points, as they were put in some pretty tough spots by an offense that turned the ball over a ton and couldn’t keep the ball all that consistently. This year, the Colts defense will need their offense to give them more help, especially with Okereke gone to do so much clean-up work.
Positives & Negatives
When change is the biggest positive for a team, that means there are a lot of negatives with their roster as well. But the Colts are clearly trying to fix their issues going into 2023, especially at quarterback, and that is commendable. The question now will be whether those quarterback changes can help the Colts begin to turn things around on the offensive side of the ball.
Unfortunately, there are a ton of negatives for this Colts team, and their defense could become a bigger one this season. Losing Gilmore and Okereke could mean a worse defensive showing than last year, even with the Colts having a terrible scoring defense a season ago. The pass defense of this team is especially worrisome, as they were a middle of the pack pass defense per attempt last year, and that could get worse in 2023.
2023 Indianapolis Colts Win Total Prediction: Under 6.5 Wins
The Colts could finish at the bottom of the AFC South division standings, or at least compete with the dismal Houston Texans in that department. Richardson will need some time to become a functional NFL quarterback, and Minshew has proven that he is not good enough to lead a team that that position either. A four or five-win season is well within the realm of possibility for Indy in 2023.
