Two storied College Football names are set to play in Week One when the #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish visit the Florida State Seminoles on Sunday, September 5, 2021. Notre Dame has been one of the juggernauts of College Football in recent year, while Florida State has been on a steady decline. This game will air live on ABC at 7:30 p.m. EST.
Notre Dame is coming off a successful regular season in 2020, but the postseason was cruel to the Fighting Irish. Entering the ACC Championship Game, Notre Dame was 10-0, but they ended the season with a 34-10 loss in that conference title game and followed that up with a 31-14 defeat to Alabama in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. It was the second time in three seasons that Brian Kelly has led Notre Dame to the playoffs.
Mike Norvell’s first season in Tallahassee was not a good one as Florida State finished 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the ACC. It was Florida State’s third consecutive losing season, the first time that happened since 1974-1976, and it was their worst season record wise since 1975. The former Memphis Tigers head coach has a big rebuild to go through.

Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan will be the starting QB for Notre Dame this season and he will have plenty of talent to choose from. There might not be a better TE in the country than Michael Mayer, WR Avery Davis is always reliable, and RB Kyren Williams will be back to build off a successful 2020 season. The offensive line is also a strong point as Jarrett Patterson and Blake Fisher will anchor the unit. Defensively, Notre Dame may have the best player in the country in Junior Safety Kyle Hamilton, who should be a top five pick in next year’s NFL Draft. The defensive line is also loaded and will led by Isaiah Foskey, Kurt Hinish, and Jayson Ademiola.
The QB position is still a question mark in Tallahassee as UCF transfer McKenzie Milton and Sophomore Jordan Travis were both listed as the starters in the first FSU depth chart. Milton, if healthy, is an incredible talent, but his long injury history may lead to more of Travis at the position. RB Jashaun Corbin and WR Ontaria Wilson will be key weapons for the Seminoles offense. Defensively, Florida State will be led by their front seven and, particularly, the linebacker duo of Amari Gainer and Stephen Dix.
Series History: Notre Dame has won the last two meetings, but Florida State leads the all-time series 6-4.
CFB Predictions: Notre Dame -7 Sunday night.
