- Phoenix has lost four of its last five games, with three of those losses coming by double-digits.
- Seattle has won four straight games and appears to be trending in the right direction after a slow start to the year.
So far this season, the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm both find themselves in the top eight in the WNBA standings. But to protect their potential playoff positioning, games like this against one another could loom large as the season wears on. On this page, you will get our WNBA betting picks for Mercury vs Storm in a significant matchup between Western Conference foes.
This game will be played at 10:00 PM ET at Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
Phoenix Mercury
Heading into Mercury vs Storm on Tuesday night, the Phoenix Mercury are struggling. They have lost four of their last five games, with their lone win in that stretch coming at home against an LA Sparks team that is still finding its footing with a young core. Here, the Mercury will face a team that could not be more different than the Sparks, as they face a Seattle team led by a group of veterans that knows exactly what it takes to win in this league.
Defense is becoming a major concern for the Mercury as we approach the end of the first quarter of the season. Phoenix ranks 11th out of 12 teams in the W in defensive rating, with only the Indiana Fever ranking worse in that department. If things do not improve on that end of the floor, all of the scoring in the world from Kahleah Copper and Diana Taurasi might not be enough to win a game like this one.
Seattle Storm
The Seattle Storm got off to a 1-3 start to their season but have won four straight games to move to 5-3. That mark is good for fifth place in the WNBA standings heading into Tuesday’s play. And while the Storm are favored to win a fifth game in a row by beating the Mercury here, Seattle will need to play some of their best basketball on the defensive end of the floor to avoid an upset.
While Seattle ranks fourth in the league in defensive rating, they are in the bottom-half of the WNBA in defensive rebounding percentage. Phoenix is sorely lacking in the frontcourt with Brittney Griner out of action due to injury. But if the Storm fails to close possessions out with defensive rebounds, the Mercury could still keep this game close and give themselves enough of an opening to steal this one in Seattle.
