Sparks vs Liberty Betting Pick
This game will be played at Barclays Center at 7:00 PM ET on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.
The New York Liberty and LA Sparks enter this week of WNBA action on the playoff bubble. The Sparks currently sit in eighth place, while the Liberty are a game back despite being in 11th out of 12 teams. On Tuesday, they begin a two-game series that could help decide who makes the playoffs this season. In our WNBA picks, we break down Sparks vs Mercury at the start of a huge week for both sides.
Why Bet The Liberty:
✅ The LA Sparks have been nothing short of a disaster since buying out Liz Cambage. They lost by double figures to the Phoenix Mercury, and were dominated by the Minnesota Lynx as well. Here, they face a cross-country road trip on a day’s rest against a Liberty team in need of wins. That is a terrible recipe for the Sparks, who will struggle again here.
✅ Without Cambage, the physicality of the Liberty is going to be too much for the Sparks to handle. The trio of Stefanie Dolson, Natasha Howard, and Han Xu will get the better of the Ogwumikes. With inadequate reinforcements for Nneka and Chiney, the Sparks will likely lose the battle on the backboards, and the game.

✅ Even when Cambage was around, the Sparks struggled. Los Angeles has the second worst average margin in the league. Only the Indiana Fever have a worse number than LA’s -5.1 ppg margin. And with the Sparks being 5-9 on the raod this season, the that margin is unlikely to improve on Tuesday.
Los Angeles Sparks
The 2022 season is in a tenuous position for the LA Sparks. They are in eighth place in the WNBA standings, which would be good enough for a playoff spot. But they have to survive the rest of the season to hold onto that spot. With Liz Cambage walking out, the Sparks have to figure out how to replace her during a tough stretch on the road against the Liberty.
In addition to their porous defense and subpar rebounding numbers, the Sparks do not shoot the ball all that well. Los Angeles is the only team in the WNBA making under six threes per game this season. And without Liz Cambage to attract attention in the paint, that number is unlikely to increase in this contest.
New York Liberty
Over the weekend, the New York Liberty got a huge home win over the Phoenix Mercury. That win put them within a game of the top-eight in the WNBA standings. Here, the Liberty have a golden opportunity to get even closer to a playoff spot. All they have to do is play well in this game and on Wednesday against the Sparks to keep moving up the ladder.
New York’s biggest edge in this game is its perimeter shooting. The Liberty average 9.7 made threes per game, and attempt more than any other team. If they can shoot well from outside here, the Sparks may not be able to keep up.
