Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs are suddenly one of the best teams in hockey and are slowly but surely chasing down the Boston Bruins for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. Toronto hasn’t lost in regulation in ten games, going 9-0-1 in that stretch to sit just three points behind the Bruins entering Thursday’s trip to New York to face the Rangers.
The momentum will be high for the Leafs going on the road after yet another blowout win over the lowly Anaheim Ducks in Toronto on Tuesday night. The Leafs took advantage of a favorable matchup against a cellar dweller in the Ducks, scoring seven goals in a 7-0 blowout. Alex Kerfoot was the star man on the night, scoring two goals and taking advantage of the blowout to pad his stats.
Toronto’s hot streak has been bolstered by the return of goaltender Ilya Samsonov from injury. Samsonov has had a strong season after replacing Matt Murray as the Leafs number one goaltending option and his 28 save shutout against the Ducks will be a welcome sight to Leafs fans as the team has a healthy Murray and Samsonov after dealing with some injury issues in the crease to start the season.
New York Rangers
New York is on a four game win streak and flying high after some recent wins over contending teams. In the past ten days the Rangers have enjoyed wins over the Vegas Golden Knights, the defending champion Colorado Avalanche as well as the red hot New Jersey Devils. Indicating that things are turning around for the team after a slower start to the season after their Eastern Conference Finals run last spring.
Filip Chytil was the hero for the Rangers in the win over the rival Devils, scoring the overtime winner in a 4-3 win in what was an entertaining game. Igor Shesterkin earned the win, but was off his usual level as the talented netminder conceded three goals on 29 shots against the Devils.
The game between the Leafs and Rangers will be the first of the season for the two teams. With the next game between the two Original Six franchises coming on January 25 before a late season affair on April 13 rounds out the season series.
