This Clippers vs Pelicans matchup is something of a mismatch. The Clippers remain a high end team that will continue to have real championship aspirations. Even without Kawhi Leonard at this portion of the season, they are a formidable opponent, particularly at home. The Pelicans on the other hand have had a horrific start to the season. Only three teams currently carry a worse record than the Pels. Did the oddsmakers set this line wide enough?

Why Bet The Clippers
✅ The Pelicans are a terrible team this season, and that holds especially true in road games. I mentioned in the intro they have the fourth worst record overall at 5-17. The biggest contributor to that poor mark is the 2-10 road record. There are actually two teams worse than that by record. There is not however, a team that is statistically worse than the Pelicans on the road.
✅ The Pelicans have the dishonor of holding the top spot in the two statistical categories no team wants. Their -12.8 points per game road differential is worst in the league. If there is a silver lining to take, it is that they have been slightly better vs expected differential. They are also worst in the league in that category, at -13.1 points per game. The Pels are horrific at both ends of the floor on the road, but it is the offensive end where they struggle the worst. They are the fifth least efficient offensive team in the league and play at a very slow pace. This translates to the second lowest scoring output in the league.
✅ The Clippers are a solid home team with a 9-5 record. They have had the majority of their success at Staples, as they are just 2-4 on the road. There is one huge strength for the Clips at home, and that is their defense. They are solid everywhere, but the defensive end of the floor is what stands out. They do not have anything resembling a glaring weakness, and use their defense and slow pace to produce wins. They are second in the league in defensive efficiency and fourth in gross scoring allowed. The matchup is a nightmare for a Pelicans teams that consistently struggles to score.
