Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Grant Williams, Richaun Holmes
Key Departures: Kemba Walker, Reggie Bullock, Christian Wood
The Dallas Mavericks didn’t do anything overly significant in the offseason, which is a little surprising given that they have two stars in Doncic and Irving. They brought in Grant Williams, who was previously with the Celtics, and how impactful that move will be remains to be seen. The thought process is that Williams will provide some much-needed defense for this group, but his defense might not be enough to make this a good defensive club. Christian Wood is gone, having left for the Lakers, which will put a lot on the shoulders of Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell.
Positives & Negatives
The obvious positive for the Mavericks is that they might have two of the five best pure scorers in the NBA right now. Doncic and Irving are a devastating duo when working well together, as both can get virtually whatever they want from wherever they want on the floor.
However, this team is going to be bad on defense again this year, and their depth leaves a lot to be desired in the frontcourt. Powell and Kleber aren’t great to begin with, but the Mavs are a disaster at center behind Powell. This team is in desperate need of some help around Irving and Doncic, and those reinforcements do not appear to be arriving anytime soon.

On the surface, the Dallas Mavericks look like a team that can compete with the best in the NBA. But their lack of depth and defense will really hurt them this year, especially in a Western Conference that has so many teams that could conceivably come out on top. We will take the under for the Mavericks this season, as they should struggle to live up to expectations again.
