Can Lillard Win Third Straight?
The favorite to win this year’s NBA 3-Point Contest is Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks. Lillard has won each of the last two three-point shooting contests, solidifying his status as one of the best shooters in the recent history of the league. Lillard has been dealing with injury concerns that kept him out of Milwaukee’s final game before the All-Star break, but he will be expected to put forth a great performance here against some other quality shooters.
One huge positive for Lillard is that he will not have to deal with two of the biggest threats to him over the last couple of years in this competition. Karl-Anthony Towns and Trae Young both put a ton of pressure on Lillard over the last couple of 3-point contests. Without them in the field, Lillard will be expected to get the job done, though there are still a few shooters that are more than capable of ending Lillard’s reign in this event.
Other Possible 3-Point Contest Winners
Along with Lillard, there are a few names to watch as potential winners in this contest. Darius Garland is one such name, as he has been great from beyond the three-point line for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Garland is shooting 43.1% from three-point range this season, though there will be questions about how he shoots off of the rack in this competition as he is usually on the move when he is looking for space to get his shot off.
Also firmly in contention in this contest are Normal Powell of the LA Clippers and Buddy Hield of the Golden State Warriors. Powell is one of the most improved players in the NBA this year and his three-point shooting has always been a staple of his game. Meanwhile, Hield has won this contest once before and can’t be counted out either.
At longer odds are Tyler Herro, Jalen Brunson, Cam Johnson, and Cade Cunningham. Brunson and Cunningham might have the worst chances to win this event, as their games are not those of three-point specialists. But Herro and Johnson could be intriguing selections at longer odds than the favorites, as they do center their games more around outside shooting and are a couple of strong racks away from putting pressure on the established favorites in this event.
