✅ The Red Sox’s bullpen was struggling mightily in July, pitching to a tune of 5.53 ERA, 4.36 FIP, and .326 BABIP through 122 innings of work. Over the last ten days, Boston’s relievers have tossed 44.2 frames, posting a terrible 7.25 ERA and .375 BABIP.
Boston Red Sox
The Sawx have won just three of their ten contests since the All-Star. Last Sunday, they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 to avoid a sweep in a three-game home series. Boston improved to 51-52 on the season, trailing the bottom wild card in the American League by three and a half games.
Kutter Crawford will toe the rubber Tuesday, and the 26-year-old righty is 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in six starts and nine relief appearances this season (47.2 innings pitched). In his previous four starts, Crawford has registered a nice 3.18 ERA and 3.21 FIP across 22.2 frames of work.
Houston Astros
The Astros have won eight of their first 12 games in the second half of the season. They outlasted Seattle 3-2 in ten innings this past Sunday to clinch a four-game home set against the Mariners. Houston was 67-36 on Monday, topping the AL West 12 games ahead of the M’s.
Cristian Javier will toe the slab Tuesday and try to avoid his second straight loss. The 25-year-old right-hander yielded three earned runs on five hits through five frames of work in a surprising 4-2 defeat at the lowly Oakland Athletics this past Wednesday. Javier is 6-6 with a 3.26 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 15 starts and four relief apps this season (88.1 IP). He was only 1-3 with a 4.56 ERA in five starts in July.
