Portland at Arizona State Betting Preview
The College Basketball season is back and there is a fun non-conference tilt between the Portland Pilots and Arizona State Sun Devils scheduled for opening night. Portland was picked to finish dead last in the West Coast Conference preseason poll. Arizona State was picked to finish seventh in the Pac-12, but spots 4-8 are expected to be up in the air all season long.
Portland had a disastrous 2020-2021 season and it saw the end of former head coach Terry Porter. The Pilots finished the season at the bottom of the West Coast Conference after going 6-15 overall and 0-11 in WCC play. Portland did not win a game once the calendar turned to 2021.
Last season was a step back for Bobby Hurley and Arizona State as the Sun Devils finished 11-14 overall and 7-10 in conference play. ASU did not beat any ranked opponents and bowed out in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 tournament.
Below is my pick, and preview, for the battle between the Portland Pilots and Arizona State Sun Devils.

Portland at Arizona State Betting Pick
Portland will be welcoming former Eastern Washington head coach Shantay Legans and, mostly, a brand-new roster. Legans brought in Big Sky Sixth Man of the Year, Tyler Robertson, Jack Perry, and Mike Meadows from EWU. The Pilots will also be welcoming Fordham transfer Chris Austin and Tulane transfer Moses Wood. Along with the transfers, Portland will have seven freshmen, three of which are international recruits. It will be a total rebuild for a few years in Portland.
Arizona State had a lot of turnover in the off-season, but did seem to replace talent with almost equal talent. There are six returning players on the roster, but the loss of Josh Christopher to the NBA and the transfers of Remy Martin (Kansas) and Alonzo Verge Jr. (Nebraska) will cause huge holes for the Sun Devils this season. Bobby Hurley went to work on the transfer portal and brought over Jay Heath, who averaged 14.5 ppg for Boston College last season, and D.J. Horne, who averaged 15.1 ppg as a starter for Illinois State. The biggest transfer addition is Marreon Jackson who heads to Tempe after winning the MAC Player of the Year last season at Toledo. Jackson did at all for Toledo as he averaged 18.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 5.9 apg, and 1.8 spg last season. Heath and Jackson should be starters for this team opening night.
