The NFL Defensive Player of the Year award is one of the few ways defense is celebrated in today’s NFL. With rules continuing to be bent in the favor of offenses, this is one of the only avenues for defense to be encouraged. And in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year betting markets, bettors can often find value betting on who will win this award that supports the stifling of opposing offenses.
This award has largely been passed around by defensive linemen in recent years, with defensive linemen winning it eight out of the last 10 years. If you count T.J. Watt as a defensive linemen, it is nine out of 10. Of course, five of those combined awards went to Aaron Donald and J.J. Watt. But the ability to make plays up front has been rewarded handsomely in this market in recent seasons.
That brings us to the betting odds for this year’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year:

Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys
Micah Parsons came into last season as the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, but fell short in that race to Myles Garrett. This year, Parsons is once again the early favorite to come away with this individual award. But the competition for it will be stiff and bettors may want to look at someone with slightly longer odds for more value.
Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns
Myles Garrett earned Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, narrowly beating out several other talented pass rushers, many of whom are on this year’s list of favorites to win DPOY. Garrett is so disruptive for opposing offenses that it is hard to see him dropping off in terms of his production this year. Still, you never know what could happen and Garrett will need to earn every sack he gets in 2024.
TJ Watt, Pittsburgh Steelers
TJ Watt was healthy for the most part last season after his 2022 campaign was cut short due to injury. Watt is expected back for the entirety of the 2024 season for the Steelers, whose defense will be especially important early in the season with Russell Wilson looking to get on the same page with his new receivers on his new team. And Watt’s expected contributions make him a favorite to win this award once again.
Nick Bosa, San Francisco 49ers
Nick Bosa had 10.5 sacks last season for the San Francisco 49ers. And while that is an impressive total, it was not enough to keep him in serious contention for Defensive Player of the Year honors. He will look to regroup in 2024 and sustain a high level of play on the Niners’ defensive line to help his team get back to the Super Bowl while claiming some individual accolades as well.
Maxx Crosby, Las Vegas Raiders
Maxx Crosby has racked up 12.5 sacks or more in each of the last two seasons for the Las Vegas Raiders. Vegas will certainly be a more defensive-minded club in 2024 under Antonio Pierce, in his first full year as the team’s head coach. Crosby should benefit from that more than just about anyone, as the Raiders pass rusher has a real shot at winning DPOY.
2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Prediction
The unfortunate nature of this award is that pass rushers are always going to have the advantage over players at other positions unless a defensive back puts up an insane number of interceptions. We will back another pass rusher to win this award this season, as we will take TJ Watt to win this award in what should be a very entertaining race between at least five pass rushers in 2024.
