- Washington is 0-4 to start the season and has struggled to find any sort of consistency offensively this year.
- The Mercury have a new top gun in Kahleah Copper, who is averaging 31.3 points per game early in the year.
The Phoenix Mercury and Washington Mystics have had very different starts to the 2024 WNBA season. Phoenix has had a ton of early-season success this year, while Washington has yet to pick up a win. Will those trends continue in Thursday’s Mystics vs Mercury matchup, or will they be broken for the night? Here are our WNBA betting picks for this matchup out in The Valley.
This game will be played at 10:00 PM ET at Footprint Center on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Washington Mystics
The Washington Mystics have started their season with four straight losses. To be fair to Washington, two of those losses came against elite teams in the New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun. But a home loss to a Seattle Storm team without Nneka Ogwumike on the floor was a major blow, while the loss after that on the road to the LA Sparks was even worse. Here, Washington will look to get into the win column for the first time.
Washington’s biggest question going into this Mystics vs Mercury matchup will be whether they can get the scoring production they need from their guards. Without Brittney Sykes in the lineup due to injury, and with Natasha Cloud now wearing a Mercury uniform, guard play has been lacking on the offensive end of the floor for the Mystics. If that does not change tonight, a fifth straight loss could be coming for this team.
Phoenix Mercury
The Phoenix Mercury have been a pleasant surprise to start the 2024 WNBA season. They are 2-1 straight up and 3-0 against the spread, splitting two games with the Las Vegas Aces and beating the Atlanta Dream to begin their year. Now, the Mercury are decent-sized favorites for the first time this season and they will try to live up to expectations on their home floor this evening.
Without Brittney Griner on the floor, there were questions about how this team would work on the court. But the Mercury have been excellent from the guard spots early in the season, as the acquisitions of Kahleah Copper and Natasha Cloud have worked out well early on. Copper has been arguably the best player in the league to start this season, averaging 31.3 points per game, and the Mercury will need her to keep scoring in bunches if they want to win this game and move to 3-1 on the year.
