Liverpool
It is likely manager Jurgen Klopp couldn’t be any happier with Liverpool’s recent results ahead of their big Champions League rematch with Real Madrid. Not only did Liverpool win with two clean sheets, the right players found themselves on the scoresheet at a much needed time to build confidence in attack.
January signing Cody Gakpo scored against both Everton and Newcastle while Darwin Nunez scored his second goal in ten matches since the World Cup. Getting Nunez in goalscoring form is crucial to Liverpool’s hopes of a deep Champions League run as his inability to find the back of the net has cost the club a handful of results in the Premier League.
Mohammed Salah shouldered the goalscoring load in the group stage, scoring seven of Liverpool’s 17 goals. Salah has a chance to tie Didier Drogba as the all time leading African goalscorer in the Champions League so he will be even more motivated to find the back of the net. Finding the back of the net was an issue in last year’s final, where Liverpool had 24 shot attempts but failed to score. If the Reds want revenge, Salah, Nunez and Gakpo will need to step up and grab at least a goal or two.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid will be confident in their chances of beating Liverpool once again given their historical success over the English club. Real have won five of their last six matches against Liverpool, including the 1-0 win in the Champions League Final last May.
Vinicius Jr. was the hero that day for Madrid, scoring the lone goal to lift the trophy. Thibaut Courtois’ goalkeeping heroics were also crucial as the Belgian keeper made nine saves in the match, the most of any keeper in the final since they started tracking the stat in 2003-04.
Real Madrid will have to overcome a busy schedule to put forward a winning effort against Liverpool. They have played 14 matches in 2023, six more than their opponents. Madrid’s travel over that span has been a bigger concern than the amount of matches as trips to Saudi Arabia and Morocco add to the potential for fatigue in the squad.
