Argentina and Austria meet in Dallas with Group J control on the line after both teams opened the 2026 World Cup with 3 points. Argentina began their title defense with a 3-0 win over Algeria, while Austria earned a 3-1 result against Jordan. A second victory would put either side in an excellent position to reach the Round of 32, making this one of the more meaningful group-stage games on Monday’s slate.
Argentina could hardly have asked for a better start. Lionel Messi scored all 3 goals against Algeria, giving Lionel Scaloni’s side a comfortable win and placing them first in Group J on goal difference. Messi’s hat trick also moved him level with Miroslav Klose on 16 career World Cup goals, so Austria will be well aware that every touch near the box could carry added danger.
The defending champions were controlled in possession against Algeria and rarely allowed the game to become stretched. That approach matters here. Austria are much more aggressive than Algeria, and Ralf Rangnick’s team will look to press Argentina high, force rushed passes, and turn the match into a series of quick transitions.
Austria’s 3-1 win over Jordan was less comfortable than the final score suggests. Jordan stayed level until the 76th minute, when an own goal put Austria ahead, before Marko Arnautovic added a late penalty. Austria got the job done, but their defensive shape was exposed at times when their press was bypassed. That is a concern against an Argentina side with Messi, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Lautaro Martinez capable of finding space between the lines.
Argentina will need to make one defensive adjustment. Gonzalo Montiel is unavailable with a hamstring issue, and Nahuel Molina is expected to start at right back. Austria have a fitness concern of their own, although Stefan Posch is expected to be available despite a broken jaw and could play with facial protection.
Austria have enough quality to make this uncomfortable. David Alaba brings leadership at the back, Marcel Sabitzer can dictate spells in midfield, and Arnautovic offers a physical outlet when Austria need to go direct. Still, Argentina have a stronger collection of match-winners and more experience in high-stakes World Cup games.
The moneyline price reflects Argentina’s superior squad, but Austria are not a passive underdog. Rangnick’s side can disrupt possession and create moments through pressure, especially if Argentina are slow to settle without Montiel. The concern for Austria is whether they can keep their defensive structure intact for 90 minutes.
Argentina are more likely to control the ball, create the cleaner chances, and punish any gap left by Austria’s aggressive shape. Austria should have periods where they make life difficult, but Argentina’s quality in central areas gives them the edge.
Argentina should win a competitive match rather than cruise. Austria have the organization and intensity to keep the score close, and their attacking players can take advantage if Argentina lose possession in dangerous areas. Still, the reigning champions have more proven quality in the final third.
Argentina Moneyline at -175 matches the 2-1 projection. The price is not a bargain, but Argentina have the stronger defense, the deeper midfield, and the best player on the pitch. Austria can keep this tight, yet Argentina are the more reliable side to secure 3 points.
