Uruguay enters Sunday’s Group H clash against Cape Verde needing a response after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in its tournament opener. Marcelo Bielsa’s side controlled large portions of that match but struggled to convert possession into clear scoring opportunities. Cape Verde arrives with confidence after one of the biggest surprises of the opening round, holding Spain to a scoreless draw in the nation’s first-ever World Cup match. With the group still wide open, three points here would put either side in a strong position heading into the final matchday.
Cape Verde deserves plenty of credit for frustrating Spain and earning a historic point, but asking the tournament debutants to produce a similar defensive performance against another quality opponent just six days later is a difficult assignment. Uruguay possesses more attacking depth, greater experience, and significantly more individual quality across the pitch.
The key factor is urgency. Uruguay knows that dropping points again would leave its qualification hopes in danger entering the final group match. Bielsa's teams generally respond well after disappointing results, and the tactical adjustments discussed after the Saudi Arabia draw should help create more dangerous opportunities in the attacking third.
Cape Verde has shown it can defend in numbers and remain organized for long stretches. However, Uruguay should eventually find the breakthrough and control the match from there. A 2-0 victory looks like the most likely outcome.

The first leg aligns with our overall matchup analysis. Uruguay was the better side against Saudi Arabia despite failing to secure three points, while Cape Verde is unlikely to sustain the same level of defensive success against elite opponents throughout the group stage.
The second leg is supported by the style of both teams. Cape Verde held Spain scoreless and has shown a willingness to sit deep and defend. Uruguay has also played several low-scoring matches recently, making a shootout unlikely.
The final leg focuses on Nunez. The striker remains Uruguay's primary scoring threat despite a lengthy scoring drought. Bielsa continues to trust him in advanced positions, and this matchup offers an opportunity to break through against a defense that could spend much of the evening under pressure.
Few teams entered the tournament with more expectations than Uruguay. While they remain one of South America's strongest sides, the opening draw against Saudi Arabia exposed some familiar issues in front of goal. Uruguay enjoyed more possession and territory but lacked the finishing touch required to secure all three points.
Federico Valverde remains the heartbeat of the midfield and will be expected to drive Uruguay forward. Rodrigo Bentancur provides balance in central areas, while Nunez carries the responsibility of converting chances. If Uruguay can improve the quality of its final pass and finishing, the goals should follow.
Cape Verde's story has already become one of the most compelling narratives of the tournament. The African nation arrived at its first World Cup with few outside expectations and immediately delivered a result that grabbed global attention. Their 0-0 draw with Spain showcased discipline, organization, and excellent goalkeeping.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was one of the stars of the opening round, producing a series of key saves to preserve the clean sheet. The defensive structure in front of him was equally impressive, limiting Spain's opportunities in dangerous areas and forcing the European side into increasingly difficult attempts.
The challenge now becomes balancing defense with ambition. A draw against Spain was an excellent result, but Cape Verde may need to show more attacking intent if they hope to reach the knockout stage. Head coach Bubista has indicated that his team could adopt a more aggressive approach moving forward, though that carries risks against Uruguay's midfield quality.
Expect Cape Verde to remain compact and difficult to break down early. Uruguay may need patience, but the South Americans should create enough opportunities over 90 minutes to wear down the underdogs. Look for Uruguay to secure a professional victory and put itself in a strong position entering the final group-stage match. My projection is Uruguay 2, Cape Verde 0.
