Post-MD1 update: every team in Group B has 1 point after two 1-1 draws, so goal difference has not separated the table. Switzerland remain the strongest projection, but the Qatar draw has tightened the group.
Projected standings

Group analysis
Group B is much tighter after Matchday 1 than the pre-tournament market expected. Canada and Bosnia drew 1-1 in Toronto, with Jovo Lukic putting Bosnia ahead from a set-piece routine before Cyle Larin came off the bench to rescue Canada’s first-ever World Cup point. Qatar then stunned Switzerland with a stoppage-time equaliser in Santa Clara, cancelling out Breel Embolo’s first-half penalty and leaving all four teams level on 1 point.
Switzerland still deserve to be treated as the most reliable side in the group. They created enough chances to beat Qatar comfortably, but their inability to convert 26 attempts has to be taken seriously. Murat Yakin’s side now face Bosnia in Los Angeles knowing a draw would leave the group awkward, while a win would put them back in control before the Vancouver decider against Canada.
Canada’s draw was not a disaster, but it does change the urgency around the Qatar game. Jesse Marsch’s side produced the better late chances against Bosnia and the Larin equaliser gives him a strong case to start alongside Jonathan David in Vancouver. Alphonso Davies was not ready to start the opener after his hamstring issue, so his fitness remains the biggest lineup variable for the co-hosts.
Bosnia’s point was valuable because it came away from home against a host nation. Their set-piece threat was clear, with Sead Kolasinac flicking on the corner that led to Lukic’s opener, but the late pressure they absorbed also underlined why the Switzerland match is a different test. Qatar’s point was the biggest swing of the group. Mahmoud Abunada’s performance in goal and Boualem Khoukhi’s late header have turned the Canada match into a genuine opportunity rather than a damage-limitation spot.
Expert insight: Group B is no longer a clean Switzerland-Canada ladder. Both favourites dropped points, Qatar have a platform, and Bosnia’s set-piece profile makes them dangerous against Switzerland.
ATS.io expert verdicts
The sharp edge
Do not treat Group B like the pre-tournament market anymore. Switzerland remain the strongest team, but both favourites failed to win their openers. The strongest live angle is Canada’s team news before Qatar. If Davies is ready to start or play meaningful minutes, Canada’s attacking ceiling improves. If not, the Larin-David pairing becomes the more important tactical adjustment.

Best bets after Matchday 1
Best live angle
Canada to beat Qatar
TBD
Canada dropped two points against Bosnia but finished stronger after Larin entered. Qatar’s draw with Switzerland was impressive, yet it came with a deep defensive block and heavy Swiss pressure. Canada should still carry the higher attacking ceiling in Vancouver, especially if Davies is ready for meaningful minutes.
Match read
Switzerland to respond vs Bosnia
TBD
Switzerland were wasteful rather than poor against Qatar. The 26-shot performance shows they can control the game, but Bosnia’s set-piece threat makes a straight moneyline price sensitive. Check the live number before backing the Swiss.
Wildcard watch
Qatar to advance
TBD
This was a long shot before Matchday 1, but the Switzerland point changes the equation. Qatar still need another result, but they now have a real third-place route if they avoid defeat against Canada or beat Bosnia in Seattle.
Group B betting analysis
The pre-tournament positions need to be softened. Switzerland were still the better side against Qatar, but dropping points as a heavy favourite means their group-winner price should no longer be treated as automatic value. Canada’s draw with Bosnia was more manageable because Qatar remain their most winnable fixture, but the co-hosts now have less margin for error.
The next two injury reads matter more than any static pre-tournament number. Canada need a clearer Davies update before pricing the Qatar match. Bosnia need to know whether Kolasinac is fully fit after his late issue against Canada. Qatar’s biggest positive is Abunada, whose shot-stopping performance against Switzerland makes their defensive floor look stronger than it did before the tournament.

Team overview
Canada earned their first ever World Cup point but still left Toronto knowing the Bosnia game was a missed chance. Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi started up front, but Cyle Larin changed the game from the bench and now has a strong case to start against Qatar. Alphonso Davies did not start the opener as Canada managed his hamstring recovery, so his availability remains the key call before Vancouver.
Projected XI vs Qatar: 4-4-2
Ratings
Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
Larin gives Canada a proven penalty-box option after scoring with his first touch from the bench
Eustaquio and Kone gave Canada enough midfield control to build second-half pressure
Vancouver should provide another heavy home-crowd advantage against Qatar
Weaknesses
Davies is still a fitness variable and was not ready to start the opener
Canada were wasteful before Larin’s equaliser and still lack a World Cup win
Johnston and de Fougerolles are already carrying yellow cards

Team overview
Switzerland controlled large stretches against Qatar and still left with only a point. Embolo’s penalty looked like it would be enough, but the late equaliser means Yakin’s side now need to respond against Bosnia. There are no obvious suspension issues, so a similar XI is likely, though the attacking line could be tweaked if Yakin wants more end product.
Projected XI vs Bosnia: 3-4-2-1

Next: Canada · Abunada expected to keep place

Team overview
Qatar’s draw with Switzerland was their first World Cup point and changes the group picture. Abunada’s shot-stopping performance should keep him in goal, while Lopetegui may be tempted to retain the same compact structure that frustrated Switzerland. Almoez Ali started on the bench in the opener, so his role remains the main attacking question before Canada.

Afif remains capable of creating a transition moment against Canada’s high press

Switzerland created 26 attempts, so the draw should not be read as full control
Qatar may have to defend for long spells again in Vancouver
Almoez Ali’s bench role leaves uncertainty around their best attacking setup

Team overview
Bosnia took a useful point from Canada and showed exactly why they are dangerous from dead balls. Lukic rewarded Barbarez’s decision to start him with the opener, while Dzeko remained on the bench as he worked back toward full fitness. Kolasinac was vital at both ends, but his late issue makes him the main player to monitor before Switzerland.
