The ATS Model Favors Sporting
Our Sporting vs Galatasaray quantitative prediction recommends Sporting on the moneyline.
The model gives Sporting a 58% win probability and also identifies Luis Suárez as an anytime goalscorer candidate.
I have no major disagreement with either conclusion. Sporting are at home and have started the Portuguese league strongly, while the betting market also makes them favorites.
The more interesting question is what happens at the other end of the pitch.
Victor Osimhen's Absence Changes Galatasaray
Osimhen has been ruled out of the Champions League opener with an adductor injury.
The projected lineup consequently has Barış Alper Yılmaz starting through the middle, with Yunus Akgün, Aleksey Batrakov and Leroy Sané operating behind him. We might also potentially see Rafa Leão get his first start in the Galatasaray kit.
Yılmaz can play across the front line and has spent much of the early domestic season operating from a wider attacking position. Without Osimhen, however, he could become Galatasaray's most advanced player and take on considerably more responsibility around the penalty area.
For a player-shot prop, that's much more interesting to me than trying to predict whether he actually scores.
Why I Like Barış Alper Yılmaz 2+ Shots
Yılmaz has taken eight shots across 310 minutes in Galatasaray's opening four Süper Lig matches.
His game-by-game totals are:
- 3 shots vs. Çorum
- 2 shots vs. Erzurumspor
- 2 shots vs. Göztepe
- 1 shot in 58 minutes vs. Başakşehir
That means he has recorded at least two shots in three of four league appearances despite not spending all of those minutes as Galatasaray's central striker.
He is averaging approximately 2.3 shots per 90 minutes over that stretch.
Now remove Osimhen and potentially move Yılmaz closer to goal.
The bet doesn't require Galatasaray to win. It doesn't even require them to score. We simply need Yılmaz to produce two shooting attempts over the course of the match.
Yılmaz 2+ Shots Odds at BetMGM
BetMGM currently prices Barış Alper Yılmaz 2+ shots at -135.
That price carries a 57.4% break-even probability.
Yılmaz has cleared the two-shot mark in three of his first four league appearances this season. I wouldn't treat that 75% early-season hit rate as his true probability given the small sample, but it does provide useful context.
More importantly, the circumstances are changing in a way that could favor this prop.
Yılmaz has already been generating shots while operating in different attacking roles. If he starts centrally in Osimhen's absence, he should spend more time in the areas where Galatasaray normally look for their striker.
At -135, I think the price is reasonable enough to back that role change.
