Alabama vs Kentucky Preview & Prediction: Can the Wildcats Pull Off the Upset?

Alabama and Kentucky open SEC play on Saturday, September 12, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET at Kroger Field in Lexington. Both teams cruised to 30-plus-point wins over lesser competition in Week 1, but Saturday should give us a much better idea of what to expect from each of them this year.
Kentucky will look to pull off an upset in its first season under new head coach Will Stein, while Kalen DeBoer and No. 12 Alabama hope to build on last year’s College Football Playoff appearance and make an even deeper run.
In this preview, I’ll share my Alabama vs Kentucky prediction and break down some of the biggest storylines surrounding this Week 2 SEC matchup.

Kentucky is a completely different team without defensive-minded Mark Stoops, with a new roster and former Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein taking over. The Wildcats also gave up 305 yards to Youngstown State last week, and now they have to deal with dual-threat quarterback Keelon Russell after he looked great in his first career start. I’m expecting plenty of points in this one, especially from Alabama.”
A 6% edge in our projections
Polymarket prices Alabama’s team total over 29.5 at 53 cents, giving it a 53% implied probability. Our model gives the over a 59% chance to hit and projects Alabama to score 34 points. That creates a 6% edge at the current price, with the over playable up to around 57 cents.
Kentucky’s secondary could be tested
Kentucky has plenty of inexperience in the secondary, and Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard threw for 243 yards and a touchdown against the Wildcats last week. Russell’s first road start could lead to some mistakes, but his dual-threat ability gives Alabama several ways to attack this defense. And if Kentucky can score enough to keep the game competitive, Alabama should have less opportunity to take its foot off the gas.

One of the biggest things Kentucky has going for it this week is that Alabama will be starting a 19-year-old quarterback in his first career road game. Keelon Russell looked impressive against East Carolina, but a hostile SEC crowd at Kroger Field should be a much different challenge.
Kentucky fans should be fired up for the first SEC game of the Will Stein era, so it’ll be interesting to see how Russell handles the pressure and crowd noise. Alabama struggled in a similar spot last year, losing its road opener 31-17 at Florida State while Russell watched from the sideline behind Ty Simpson.
This time, Kalen DeBoer will be counting on Russell to keep the offense composed and avoid letting the environment dictate the game.
One of Alabama’s biggest flaws last season was its running game, highlighted by an embarrassing 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in which the Crimson Tide finished with minus-3 rushing yards.
So far, things look much better in 2026. Alabama rushed for 227 yards and five touchdowns against East Carolina, led by Keelon Russell with 86 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Starting running back Daniel Hill added 47 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, while EJ Crowell finished with 37 yards and a score on seven attempts.
Russell’s ability to make plays with his legs gives Alabama another dimension it didn’t have much of last year. If the Crimson Tide can get similar production from Russell, Hill, and Crowell against SEC competition, this offense should be much tougher to slow down.
For most of Mark Stoops’ 13 years at Kentucky, the Wildcats were known for physical, defense-first football and grinding out games. Alabama never had much trouble with that style, though, beating Stoops’ teams by a combined 194-37 across four matchups dating back to 2013.
Kentucky looks completely different under Will Stein. The former Oregon offensive coordinator helped lead one of the nation’s most productive offenses, with the Ducks averaging 36.9 points and 452.2 yards per game in his final season there.
That offensive approach was already on display in Kentucky’s opener. The Wildcats put up 506 total yards, including 301 through the air and 205 on the ground, while averaging 8.3 yards per play in a 45-13 win over Youngstown State. With Stein and Kalen DeBoer now on opposite sidelines, we could see a much higher-scoring matchup than we became accustomed to during the Stoops era.
If Kentucky hopes to pull off the upset, it’ll need a big game from Kenny Minchey. The senior Notre Dame transfer posted a 208.8 passer rating in his first career start last week, throwing for 301 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
He’ll need some help, too. Tight end Willie Rodriguez is one of Kentucky’s biggest offensive weapons, while center Coleton Price will have an important job keeping Minchey comfortable against Alabama’s defensive front. On the other side of the ball, All-SEC safety Ty Bryant could be especially important against a young quarterback making his first road start.
That said, I’d expect Kalen DeBoer to have Alabama focused after what happened in last year’s road opener. Kentucky has just a 22% chance to win on Polymarket, and I think the Crimson Tide have enough offensive firepower to get into the 30s and cash our team total over 29.5.
