Our expectation for this game is for the Kansas City Chiefs to cover the spread as a 3.5-point underdog on the road. A big reason for that is the experience that the Chiefs have on this stage, something the Ravens do not have with their current nucleus. This is the sixth straight year that Patrick Mahomes has led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game, while it is the first time Lamar Jackson has reached this point.
On top of the Chiefs’ edge in experience, there is also the fact that we do not know if Lamar Jackson can deliver with his arm in a game like this one. Jackson did not have to throw the ball much against an overmatched Houston Texans team last week. Against a Chiefs team with the best scoring defense in football, Jackson may not be able to scramble and hand the ball off to achieve victory in this game.
Kansas City has been an underdog just twice this season, including last week’s win over the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round. They have covered the spread in both of those spots, something we expect to happen again in this game, as the Ravens will experience some growing pains in their first AFC title game with Lamar Jackson as their starting quarterback.
