NL CY YOUNG HANDICAPPING
Spencer Strider, Atlanta Braves
Spencer Strider was in the NL Cy Young mix throughout last season, before tailing off near the end of the regular season while Blake Snell took over. This year, Strider is the favorite to win the award early on for the Atlanta Braves, who have their sights set on another huge season. Strider led the league in strikeouts last season and should be at or near the top of that chart again this year, which would mean a great chance to win the Cy Young.
Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies
Last season, Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies finished in the top-20 in MLB in ERA, wins, strikeouts, and WHIP. He is starting to get up there in age, but he certainly has a chance to put up big numbers once again in 2024. We’re not sure he has staying power in the Cy Young race, but he is more than capable of proving us wrong.
Logan Webb, San Francisco Giants
Blake Snell of the San Diego Padres and Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks were the top Cy Young contenders from the NL West last season. Going into this year, the futures odds for this award have Logan Webb as the top contender from that division. Webb gave up just 31 walks in 216 innings of work last season and his pinpoint control should help him to threaten the top pitchers in the NL for this award this season.
Justin Steele, Chicago Cubs
Justin Steele was a pleasant surprise for the Chicago Cubs last season, becoming an NL Cy Young contender deep into the regular season. This year, expectations are much higher for Steele than they were a season ago. With Marcus Stroman gone this year, Steele will be called upon to be even better than he was last year, which could help him to win this award.
Other NL Cy Young Contenders
There are so many National League pitchers with a chance to win this award in 2024 beyond the names listed above. Zac Gallen and Justin Steele were in the race for much of the second half of last season and will hope to be there again this year. Meanwhile, arms like Kodai Senga, Max Fried, and Tyler Glasnow headline the rest of the pack that will hope to work their way into the mix.
Who Will Win the NL Cy Young Award?
Going into this season, we will take Justin Steele to win the NL Cy Young award. Steele carried the Cubs into playoff contention last season. With Blake Snell potentially being traded out of the National League, look for Steele to leap into the top of the Cy Young race as the season gets going this year.
