- The Mercury have been good enough offensively to avoid getting blown out yet this season, as they have averaged 84 points per game early on.
- Phoenix was competitive against Las Vegas on opening night and could very well keep this game close as well.
One week ago, the Phoenix Mercury and Las Vegas Aces opened their seasons against one another, with the Aces coming out on top in a competitive game. Tonight, they will meet again at Michelob Ultra Arena with the Aces looking to stay unbeaten and the Mercury looking to get above .500 for the first time this year. Here, we give you our WNBA betting picks for Mercury vs Aces, in the game with the largest point spread of the three games on the WNBA schedule on Tuesday night.
This game will be played at 10:00 PM ET at Michelob Ultra Arena on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.
Phoenix Mercury
The Phoenix Mercury have not had a bad start to their 2024 WNBA season at all. They lost a respectable game to the Aces on opening night last Tuesday, before coming home and getting the better of the Atlanta Dream. Phoenix will hope to stay competitive with the Aces again tonight, but not just to keep things close in a loss, as the Mercury hope for a win that will move them to 2-1 on the young WNBA season.
Of course, being without Brittney Griner will make it tougher for the Mercury to accomplish that feat tonight. But missing Griner hurts less against a team like the Aces than it does against some teams with better frontcourt play than that of Las Vegas. The Aces don’t rely much on a true center for scoring, which makes the absence of Griner something the Mercury can survive with in a game like this one. The question will be whether or not the guards of Phoenix can do enough scoring to keep up with Vegas.
Las Vegas Aces
The Las Vegas Aces are off to a 2-0 start to their 2024 WNBA campaign. Their defense of the last two league titles has started with wins over the Mercury and the LA Sparks. But these have not been blowout wins like we have become used to seeing from Becky Hammon’s team. Instead, the Aces are 0-2 against the spread to start the year, setting up an interesting Mercury vs Aces game at home tonight.
While the Aces are still the best team on the floor every night they are in action, their depth situation is always interesting to monitor during the regular season. With Chelsea Gray out of action for now, Las Vegas has fewer players to rely on for consistent scoring than usual, on a team that usually only runs seven or eight deep to begin with. But that could mean more opportunities for players like Kate Martin off the bench early in the season, which could be beneficial for Vegas in the long-term.
