New York Liberty
The New York Liberty are once again among the favorites to win the WNBA Finals this season. They brought in Breanna Stewart before the start of last season and nearly won a championship, but they fell short against the Las Vegas Aces. Now the Liberty will look to rebound from their defeat in last year’s championship series, starting with this game against the Washington Mystics.
For the Liberty, defense is going to be the key to Tuesday’s Liberty vs Mystics contest. Interior defense will be especially important, as the Mystics have one of the best young bigs in the WNBA in Shakira Austin. Jonquel Jones and Stewart certainly have the size to contain Austin, but they have to avoid foul trouble and remain disciplined defensively to avoid problems in this contest.
Fortunately, the Liberty have enough offensive firepower to offset any success that the Mystics do have offensively in this game. The question with the Liberty is always whether or not their three-point shooting can connect consistently enough to dominate games. It will be interesting to see if shooters like Sabrina Ionescu can get off to a good start in this season opening matchup.
Washington Mystics
The Washington Mystics are in an interesting spot heading into the 2024 season. They do not have Elena Delle Donne, who is sitting out this season after declining a core player designation in the offseason. They also lost Natasha Cloud to the Phoenix Mercury, with the question being how the Mystics offense looks with those two players gone.
Of course, there is still plenty of talent on this team. Brittney Sykes is likely to be the most dangerous player on the court for the Mystics, while Myisha Hines-Allen and Shakira Austin are also set to make an impact in 2024. We will also see the debut of Aaliyah Edwards in this game for the Mystics, who we last saw in the Final Four with UConn, whose size and defensive ability could make an instant impact for this team.
In this game, the Mystics will have to be great defending the three-point shot, as that is where the Liberty offense is most dangerous. Washington will also need to find a way to make some threes, as they were in the bottom-half of the WNBA in three-point shooting percentage in 2023. If that doesn’t change starting with this game, the Mystics could be in for a long night and a long season.
