- This is the first full game for the Sparks without Cameron Brink in their lineup and that should mean a poor performance and a fifth loss in a row.
- The Sparks just don’t have the guards to compete with the Liberty in this game according to our projections.
On Thursday night, we get a battle between the East Coast and the West Coast, as the New York Liberty host the LA Sparks at Barclays Center. Both teams enter this matchup off of a loss, but one team is clearly in a better position to succeed than the other right now, even if anything is possible on any given night on the basketball court. Here, we give you our WNBA betting picks for Sparks vs Liberty from Brooklyn.
This game will be played at Barclays Center at 7:00 PM ET on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Los Angeles Sparks
The Los Angeles Sparks have lost four games in a row going into Thursday’s Sparks vs Liberty matchup. Their most recent loss came at the hands of the Connecticut Sun, in a game that not only saw the Sparks lose, but saw them lose their promising rookie center Cameron Brink to a knee injury. Now, with news that Brink will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, the Sparks have to figure out a way to move forward without one of their most impactful players.
So much of the success of this Sparks team already fell on the shoulders of Dearica Hamby, who leads the team in scoring from the power forward spot. But without Brink to protect the paint, Hamby’s athleticism on the defensive end will also be more valuable than ever. Without consistent guard scoring for this Sparks team, Hamby might have too much responsibility for this team to have success the rest of the year.
New York Liberty
The New York Liberty suffered a loss to the Phoenix Mercury in their last outing, being upset in Phoenix thanks to six Mercury players scoring in double figures in that game. Tonight, the Liberty will look to rebound on their home floor in a game where they are heavy favorites. To do that, the defense of New York has to be better than it has been of late.
New York has allowed 80 or more points in three straight games, including 99 points in their loss to the Mercury on Tuesday night. The Liberty are 12-3 and have won eight of their last nine games, so no alarm bells should ring over their defense just yet. But another poor defensive showing could allow the Sparks to hang around in this game, even if Los Angeles is short-handed.
