- The Sky have some offense that can help them contend with the Wings in this game, even if the Wings should win in the end.
- Dallas was just 11-9 at home last season and there is no guarantee they win on their home floor here.
The Chicago Sky and Dallas Wings will open their 2024 WNBA seasons against one another on Wednesday night at College Park Center. Both of these teams made the postseason last year but fell short of the WNBA Finals, as they will hope that this year means bigger and better things. Here, we give you our WNBA betting picks for Sky vs Wings from the Metroplex.
This game will be played at 8:00 PM ET at College Park Center on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
Chicago Sky
The Chicago Sky finished eighth in the WNBA standings last season. Their reward for doing so was getting demolished by the Las Vegas Aces in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. But the Sky added two rookie bigs in the most recent draft that could help them climb the standings, as Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso both bring a ton of talent to a frontcourt group that struggled to find consistent traction in 2023.
Unfortunately, the debut of Cardoso will be pushed back a while, as she is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with a shoulder ailment. That could be a significant factor in this game, as Cardoso would have been a huge help against a Wings team with one of the best true centers in the league in Teaira McCowan. But even with without Cardoso, the Sky could still come away with a win in this inter-conference matchup in the W.
For Chicago to do that, they are going to need Marina Mabrey to have a big game against her former team. Mabrey averaged 23.6 points per game in three games against the Wings last season, with the Sky going 3-0 in those contests. She will need to take advantage of the lack of consistent perimeter defense from Dallas for Chicago to have a chance as a sizable underdog here.
Dallas Wings
The Dallas Wings finished in fourth place in the WNBA standings last season and made it to the second round of the postseason before falling against the Las Vegas Aces. Dallas is in an interesting spot going into the 2024 campaign, as they clearly have more talent than the majority of teams in the league, but not enough to be a true threat to the Aces for a championship. Regardless, the Wings will aim to get off to a good start in this Sky vs Wings clash.
Dallas’ biggest question mark is always going to be their defense. Last season, only two teams (the Indiana Fever and Minnesota Lynx) allowed more points per game than Dallas. Their games against Chicago were especially bad on defense, as the Wings allowed over 100 points per game in their three regular season matchups with this Sky squad.
As for this game, the Wings will not have Satou Sabally, as she had offseason shoulder surgery and should return after this summer’s Olympic break. Sabally’s versatility makes her such a unique weapon for the Wings. And while Dallas is still a heavy favorite in this game, things might not be as easy as expected without her on the floor.
