After plenty of waiting, the time for New York sports bettors has finally arrived. According to a release from the New York State Gaming Commission, four sportsbooks have been approved to launch in New York State at 9:00 AM ET on Saturday, January 8, 2022. This will give bettors the opportunity to bet with four of the biggest names in the American sports betting landscape in just a couple of days.
Which Sportsbooks Will Be Available?
The four sportsbooks that will be permitted to launch on Saturday morning are DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars and the BetRivers offering from Rush Street Interactive that will be launched in this market. They have met the requirements to launch, according to the NYSGC, which included satisfying requirements pertaining to holding physical servers on New York State ground.
There are a total of nine online sportsbooks that have been permitted for launch in total in New York State. For now, though, DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars and Rush Street’s offerings will be the only ones allowed to launch. The Gaming Commission stated in its release that the other five bookmakers are still working toward satisfying the requirements that will allow them to launch.
Those other five bookmakers set to launch in the near future are as follows: BetMGM, Resorts World, PointsBet, WynnBet and Bally Bet. New Yorkers will have access to the major sportsbooks once those five bookmakers join up with the four that are set to launch on Saturday.
How Does This Impact New Yorkers?
For New York Sports bettors, the benefits of the launch of legal sports betting are bountiful. Most notably, bettors in New York will no longer have to decide between betting illegally offshore, going to one of the few physical locations where sports betting was legal upstate, or going to another state to place bets online legally. Now, any eligible bettor who is located in New York can place a wager from anywhere in the state.
Additionally, New Yorkers will benefit from the tax revenue raised by legal sports betting in their state. Up until now, New York sports bettors were either jettisoning their funds into the coffers of offshore entities or providing nearby states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania with tax revenue by betting there. Now, the money wagered in New York will be taxed and the state itself will be able to do whatever needs to be done with it.
