The heavy favorite to win the Olympic women’s 1500m final is Faith Kipyegon of Kenya. Kipyegon has earned the designation of favorite with her previous performances in this distance. She won the gold in this event at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the Rio Olympics in 2016, winning the 2022 and 2023 World Championships as well. An Olympic three-peat is expected, though there are two other athletes inside of +1000 to win the gold instead.
Olympic Women’s 1500m Major Storylines
Kipyegon is going to be the big storyline going into the women’s 1500m final win or lose. Obviously, a win and a third straight Olympic gold would be a huge deal, especially with her adding the 5000m to her plate more consistently over the last couple of years. But she did run out of gas late in the women’s 5000m final and it will be interesting to see if Kipyegon has enough in the tank in this race that she has dominated historically.
Olympic Women’s 1500m Medal Contenders
There are three main medal contenders when it comes to this race. Along with Kipyegon, Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia and Jessica Hull of Australia are the most likely to end up on the podium. Welteji finished second in this event in the 2023 World Championships behind Kipyegon, while Hull is one of the five fastest women ever in this distance.
Beyond that top-three, there are a couple of other names who we could see on the medal stand when this race is in the books. Nikki Hiltz of the United States, Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, and Laura Muir of Scotland are in that second tier of medal contenders. While it would take something special from them to get onto the podium, the intermediate distance of this race should allow them to hang around until the final push for the podium.
Women’s 1500m Betting Prediction: Faith Kipyegon (-286)
While Kipyegon did not perform as well as expected late in the women’s 5000m final, that race is not her greatest strength. This race is her best distance and we expect the Kenyan to come away with the gold medal once again, as a third straight gold would be a first in the women’s 1500m.
