Is the F1 Title Race Already Over? Antonelli's Championship Odds After Spa

Kimi Antonelli didn't just win the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. He may have all but ended the 2026 title fight before the summer break even starts.
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver took his sixth career victory at Spa-Francorchamps, crossing the line under two seconds clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. But perhaps of more interest to bettors is what this did to the Driver's Championship standings. Antonelli now holds a 45-point lead over Lewis Hamilton, with his other title rival and teammate George Russell 50 points back after retiring on Lap 1 following an unfortunate clash with Hamilton. Antonelli's Championship chances, rated at 59% at the start of the weekend, jumped to 74% on Polymarket after a sixth win of a phenomenal season for the Italian superstar.
With 12 rounds still to run, that's not mathematically decisive, but it's the kind of gap that moves markets. So what is left in this title fight, and where is the value in the Formula 1 betting markets right now?

Russell's race ended before it really began. A first-lap collision with Hamilton took him out of contention entirely, turning what had been a tightening title race following Antonelli's own reliability problems. The Italian's buffer had shrunk to just 25 points over Russell and 32 over Hamilton coming into the weekend after two retirements in three races.
Russell had said before the race he felt a 25 point gap was more representative of the gap in performance between the two Mercedes drivers this season, but in one fell swoop, the task for the Englishman to claim his first World Drivers Championship got a whole lot harder. Russell said in post-race interviews that he was "numb to disappointment" after yet more misfortune, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to see how he can overcome the gap to his prodigiously talented teammate.
Antonelli, for his part, played it down. "I think the momentum was always there, it was just about getting the result," he said after the race. "Today, we were a bit lucky with what happened in terms of the championship, but that's why you've got to try to take every opportunity, because we saw that the situation can really swing very easily."
That last line is the one bettors should sit with. Antonelli himself is pointing out how fast this gap opened up, which raises questions over whether or not it is built to last.
Antonelli's 2026 season has been record-breaking one. He has become the youngest driver ever to lead the World Championship, youngest pole-sitter in F1 history, and the first driver to win his first four Grand Prix victories consecutively. Spa was win number six of a stellar campaign.
That kind of dominance has bookmakers moving accordingly. Antonelli is already trading as low as -350 (implied probability 77.8%) to win the title at some US sportsbooks, with Polymarket giving the Italian a 74% chance of winning a maiden Formula 1 World Championship. According to the markets at least, this title is all but sewn up.

Russell meanwhile has seen his odds fluctuate wildly throughout the season. The pre-season favorite, his title odds had drifted in from +350 to +187 after a win at the Red Bull Ring earlier in the season, before Spa undid a chunk of that progress in one afternoon. The sportsbooks now give the Englishman a 13.3% win probability (+650), with prediction markets even more sceptical of his chances, giving Russell a 9% chance of winning the title.
Not mathematically, and not by Antonelli's own admission. There are still 12 races left of this Formula One season, including Hungary this weekend.
The calendar will then finish off the European swing with trips to the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, before a full back half of the calendar gets underway in Azerbaijan. This gives Antonelli's rivals plenty of races to close the gap, particularly given Antonelli has already had two retirements in a three-race stretch this season.
Russell and Hamilton both remain quick enough to win races outright, and Leclerc seems to have found some form after struggling earlier on this season. Then there is the experience factor. Antonelli is 19 and has never carried a lead this size into a title run before, and how he handles a back end of the campaign where he is the 'hunted' over 5 months will be a reall test of his character as well as his driving ability.
All three drivers in pursuit of the lightning-fast Italian have significantly more experience, and the two Ferrari drivers pose a huge threat should their hotly-anticipated ADUO-2 spec engine upgrade provide the Scuderia with the extra horsepower they need on the straights to complement what remains the best chassis on the grid through medium and high-speed corners.
Furthermore, Hamilton in particular is not beyond engaging in mind games should the title race tighten. How the youngster handles such pressure from a 7-time World Champion remains unknown. This title race may look over on paper, but with so much of the season still to come, there is every chance the championship could flip on its head once more.
Hungary is next (July 24-26), and it's shaping up as an early test of whether Spa was a blip in the margin or the moment the title effectively locked. The Hungaroring is a circuit where track position and car balance matter more than outright horsepower, conditions that should suit Ferrari regardless of their engine spec.
Charles Leclerc, who took pole there last year, will once again be a major threat to Antonelli, but the real threat to the Mercedes man's dominance could be Lewis Hamilton. The legendary Englishman has owned this circuit over the years, and boasts the most wins (8), most pole positions (9) and the track record at the Hungaroring. With the outstanding Ferrari chassis underneath him, this weekend could prove the weekend Hamilton's own challenge to Antonelli comes alive.
For bettors, Hungary offers the first real opportunity to test whether the market has moved too far in Antonelli's direction. His title price leaves little room for error, while Hamilton, Leclerc and Russell should all be more competitive at a circuit that places greater emphasis on qualifying, balance and race execution.
Antonelli remains the man to beat, but backing his rivals in the race-winner, podium and head-to-head markets may offer better value than paying a premium for a championship favorite whose 45-point advantage could still disappear quickly.
