The clear favorite to win the Olympic gold medal in men’s basketball is the United States. But Team USA is by no means a lock to grab the gold either. There are a few other teams with reasonable odds to get their hands on the gold for themselves. Still, with all of the talent on the roster for the USA, it would take a brilliant effort from any other team to unseat the defending Olympic champions.
There will be more teams included in the list of odds to win the Olympic basketball gold medal as the games from Paris approach. The FIBA qualifying tournaments in Greece, Latvia, Puerto Rico, and Spain will take place from July 2-7. The winners of those tournaments will qualify for the games as well, as they will aim to break into the tournament and give themselves a shot for gold.
Team USA Basketball Roster For Paris Olympics
When you look at the roster for the United States men’s basketball Olympic team, it is not hard to see why they are the favorites to grab the gold. The team is loaded with some of the best players in the history of basketball, who can hurt opponents on the offensive end of the floor in a near-endless variety of ways. Below is the full roster for USA Basketball going into the Paris Olympics.
- Bam Adebayo
- Devin Booker
- Stephen Curry
- Anthony Davis
- Kevin Durant
- Anthony Edwards
- Joel Embiid
- Tyrese Haliburton
- Jrue Holiday
- LeBron James
- Kawhi Leonard
- Jayson Tatum
Clearly, this team is much better than the one that the United States sent to the FIBA World Cup a year ago. There, the best player on Team USA was likely Anthony Edwards, without a ton of superstar help for him to rely on. This time around, Edwards will likely be a bench player, which means great things for the United States as they are much deeper as a unit this time around.
Will Team USA Win the Men’s Basketball Gold Medal?
In all honesty, it is highly unlikely that the United States will fail to win the gold medal at the Paris games. There just aren’t any teams that can match up with Team USA at all five positions on the floor, even if there are some talented teams that can compare at a few spots on the court. But we have seen the United States fail to win the gold before and it is always a possibility that they fall short on the biggest stage of international basketball.
Other Men’s Basketball Gold Medal Contenders
If you are trying to find a team that could beat Team USA, there are a few choices that could be worth investigating further. Whether you want to see the United States get upset, or you just want to bet on a team at longer futures odds to win the tournament, these teams at least have a chance to claim the gold.
Canada
When they are at their best, Canada has a great chance to beat the United States, even if they are thin in the frontcourt. Canada has elite guards, led by NBA MVP finalist Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and former NBA champion Jamal Murray. They could get eaten alive by the bigs of the United States, but the Canadians will be a headache to guard and could put a scare into the United States if Team USA is not careful.
Serbia
When you have arguably the best player in the world, you always have a chance to win any game you are in. That is the case with Serbia, who come into the Olympic Games led by three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. The rest of their roster is decent as well, with dangerous scorers like Bogdan Bogdanovic poised to give the rest of the tournament field fits, even if they should fall short against the Americans.
France
There is never a tournament where France is an easy out and the 2024 Olympics will be no exception to that rule. The French have Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert on the same front line, a duo that even the United States could struggle to deal with on both ends of the floor. While the guard play for the French could hold them back in the medal rounds, France could do well when all is said and done.
Germany
At the FIBA World Cup in 2023, Germany enjoyed a series of impressive performances that culminated in a championship. While the Germans don’t have the same level of star power as many of the countries listed above, they are a rock-solid squad led by players like Dennis Schroder and the Orlando Magic’s Wagner brothers. It would be hard for Germany to enjoy a repeat performance at the Olympics, but it can’t be ruled out given how well they have performed in pressure situations.
