The New York Knicks reached the Finals through a combination of physical defense, efficient half-court offense, and timely performances from their core players. Throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs, New York lost just twice, with those two losses coming by one point each. They haven't lost since the first round of the playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks, sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round before doing the same to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
One of the defining features of New York’s postseason run has been its ability to win in different environments. Whether playing at Madison Square Garden or on the road, the Knicks have remained committed to the same identity. Strong rebounding, precise ball movement, and defensive pressure have helped them advance to the Finals for the first time since 1999.
San Antonio’s journey through the Western Conference was also impressive. The Spurs defeated the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games to win the Western Conference Finals, winning a Game 7 on the road in OKC to reach this point. San Antonio hasn't been as dominant in these playoffs as the Knicks, but they have arguably the best player on the planet in Victor Wembanyama leading them.
Wembanyama elevated his game in the Western Conference Finals, scoring 27.3 points per game and outperforming two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in that series. The question now is whether or not Wemby can continue to raise his level in his first NBA Finals appearance, in a series where both teams will be lacking Finals experience going in.
Several factors are likely to decide who lifts the Larry O'Brien Trophy at the end of the Finals.
While the Spurs are the favorites going into this championship showdown, the Knicks appear to have a slight edge. Their defensive consistency, rebounding, and recent offensive form provide a foundation that is difficult to overlook.
San Antonio should have success during stretches of the series. The Spurs have enough talent and athletic ability to win multiple games, and their young core has exceeded expectations throughout the postseason. They are capable of pushing New York to its limits and creating difficult problems on both ends of the floor.
Even so, the Knicks seem better equipped for the small details that often determine Finals outcomes. They have demonstrated an ability to execute consistently for four quarters, generate extra possessions through offensive rebounding, and maintain their identity regardless of the opponent. Those qualities become increasingly valuable as a championship series progresses.
Prediction: Knicks in 6. New York captures the 2026 NBA championship after a competitive series that highlights the strengths of both franchises and delivers an entertaining conclusion to the season.
