Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Saddiq Bey, Patty Mills, Wes Matthews
Key Departures: John Collins
The Hawks added some outside shooting in the offseason, and offloaded John Collins to the Utah Jazz. Collins is a quality player, and losing him is certainly not a positive, but veteran shooters like Mills and Matthews will help this team spread the floor and not make Trae Young do everything from the perimeter. Overall, it feels like the Hawks didn’t get much better or worse after the offseason.
Positives & Negatives
The Hawks should be a dangerous offensive team again in the 2023-24 season, and their guard play should be the biggest positive for them this year. The duo of Young and Dejounte Murray is still one of the best two-guard pairings in the NBA, and adding shooters around them will allow those two to penetrate and make plays from the mid-range.
But the Hawks have a lot of eggs in the baskets of Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu on the interior this season. Losing a capable rebounder like John Collins could negatively impact the ability of this team to secure stops on the defensive end, even if there will be a lot of scoring from this Hawks team for opponents to try and keep up with.
