Troy beat App State in the Sun Belt title game in 2023, but Troy is not the favorite to win the league this year due to turnover from last year’s squad and a mountain of quarterback injuries. Instead, Louisiana and James Madison are the favorites to come away with the league title in a conference that is wide open still. Every team is at plus money to win the conference title at this point in time, which should make for a fascinating race to be the Sun Belt champ.
There are no longer any undefeated teams in conference play in the Sun Belt this season. Louisiana was the last team to lose to a Sun Belt opponent, when they lost at home to the South Alabama Jaguars. That speaks to just how wide open this conference is, as there are still seven teams with a chance to win the conference championship.
The Sun Belt looked strong during non-conference action. Coastal Carolina and James Madison impressed out of the East Division, while the likes of Louisiana and Texas State have done the same out of the West. James Madison’s 70-point performance against North Carolina was easily the most impressive game from any Sun Belt team during non-conference play, though, which has helped them earn the status as one of the SBC betting favorites.
Last season, the Dukes were not eligible to play in the postseason as a part of their transition from the FCS level to FBS football.
