After a disastrous 0-3 start that included two losses to conference opponents, the Florida State Seminoles finally got into the win column last week with a 14-9 win over the Cal Golden Bears. That victory was by no means pretty for the Seminoles, but their defense did enough to lock Cal down, while Florida State benefited from some poor special teams play from their opponents. This week, Florida State will look for a second straight win that would bring them to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC if they can get it. But the offensive struggles of the Seminoles could continue to be a problem against an SMU team that can put up points in bunches.
SMU Set For First Conference Game In the ACC
SMU enters their first conference game as a member of the ACC with a 3-1 overall record. The Mustangs put up 66 points in a win over TCU in their final non-conference game leading up to league play last week. This week, the offense of SMU will have to contend with a better defense than they saw at any point in their non-conference schedule. But the Mustangs will also likely benefit from playing one of the worst offenses they have seen so far this season, as Florida State has averaged just 15 points per game through their first four games of the season.
Florida State vs SMU Best Bet
Though they got a win last week to end their season-opening losing streak, we still don't trust the Florida State Seminoles to deliver against high-quality competition just yet. The key to this Florida State vs SMU matchup will be whether or not Seminoles quarterback DJ Uiagalelei can find something in the passing game more consistently than he has. We do not expect that to happen and will lay the points with SMU as they should improve to 4-1 on the season with a win.
