New England Patriots Betting Preview
Last year was a weird one for the Patriots, as they had long-time defensive coach Matt Patricia serving as their offensive coordinator. That move did not work out particularly well for the Patriots, as they missed the playoffs. This year, they have hired Bill O’Brien as their offensive coordinator, who has a decent resume if you ignore his head coaching stint in Houston.
Mac Jones is back as this team’s quarterback, as the Patriots have tried to add some weapons around him to help determine if Jones is the answer at quarterback going forward in New England. Only time will tell if that is enough for the Patriots to become a playoff team once again, or if they will be an also-ran in the AFC for another year.

Key Additions: JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Gesicki, Jonathan Jones
Key Departures: Jakobi Meyers, Jonnu Smith, Devin McCourty
The Patriots made a couple of splashy moves to put some skill position talent around Mac Jones. JuJu Smith-Schuster is not the player he was in Pittsburgh, but he still has some gas left in the tank. More importantly, Mike Gesicki will join Hunter Henry to form one of the more dangerous tight end duos in the NFL, right up there with that of the Buffalo Bills’ duo of Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid.

The Patriots offense last season was mediocre at best last season, ranking 17th in scoring a season ago. Mac Jones will need to improve from where he was last season if the Patriots are going to be better in 2023 than they were in 2022. But there are legitimate questions about whether Bill O’Brien is the man who can navigate the Patriots back to having a dynamic offense.

The Patriots were so good at turning opponents over last season, which helped the rest of their defensive performance. Worth noting here is that the Patriots had 19 interceptions last season, making up more than half of their takeaways. That means the Patriots were not just beneficiaries of fumble luck, and that they are more than capable of replicating their takeaway numbers this season to help put their offense in more advantageous positions.
Positives & Negatives
On the positive side, the Patriots have done a nice job of addressing the concerns surrounding their offense in the offseason. They hired a real offensive coordinator and brought in some skill position players to help Mac Jones. Those are all good things, and could result in some steps in the right direction in a hurry.
However, the Patriots still have Mac Jones as their quarterback, which puts a ceiling on how high this team can ascend in the AFC East. Jones is now clearly the worst quarterback in this division, and the Patriots may not be able to realize their current potential until they find a signal caller who can compete with Josh Allen, Tua Tagovailoa, and even the newly acquired Aaron Rodgers.
2023 New England Patriots Win Total Prediction: Under 7.5 Wins
New England’s schedule is simply very difficult to navigate in 2023. In addition to playing in a very competitive AFC East, featuring an improved New York Jets team, the Patriots will also play the entirety of the NFC East and AFC West. That means games against another five playoff teams from last year, along with tough matchups with teams like the Raiders and Broncos. As a result, the under on the Patriots’ season win total is the way to go.
