2020 Women’s Austrailian Open Odds, Preview & Prediction

Tennis never sleeps and the short offseason is already over. The 2020 season is two weeks old and it is already time for the season’s first Grand Slam as the 2020 Australian Open is set to take place from January 20th – February 2nd in Melbourne, Australia.

Unfortunately, world #6, and defending US Open Champion, Bianca Andreescu had to withdraw from the tournament with an injury, but all of the other seeded players will be in Melbourne. Last year’s finalists, Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova are both back and among the favorites to take home the season’s first Grand Slam. The women’s field always seem wide open, but it seems more wide open than ever this year as there are probably 8 women who have a realistic shot at winning the Australian Open.

Is this the Grand Slam that Serena Williams finally ties Margaret Court, at 24, for the most Grand Slams ever? Find out below.

Draw Analysis (seed)

The top quarter of the draw features Aussie native Ash Barty (1) with a relatively comfortable first few round. Barty could face the in-from Elena Rybakina (29) in the third round and then Petra Martic (13) or Allison Riske (18) in the fourth round. The other side of this quarter has Petra Kvitova (7) with a very nice road to the fourth round. The Czech could face Ekaterina Alexandrova (25) in the third round and then Madison Keys (10) or Maria Sakkari (22) in the fourth round. A Barty vs Kvitova quarterfinal would be electric.

Naomi Osaka (3) headlines the next quarter of the draw and has a potential third round date with either 39-year-old Venus Williams or 15-year-old Coco Gauff. A fourth round match-up against Sofia Kenin (14) could be tricky. The other half of this quarter may the most brutal quarter in both draws. Jo Konta (12) could face Carolina Garcia in the second round, Dayana Yastremska (23) or Carolina Wozniacki in the third round and the Serena Williams (8) in the fourth round. A Serena vs Osaka quarterfinal is every fans dream here.

The third quarter of the draw is an interesting one as Belinda Bencic (6) could have a tricky second round opponent in Jelena Ostapenko. Bencic’s next challenge would come in the fourth round as she could face either Donna Vekic (19), Maria Sharapova, Iga Swiatek or Aryna Sabalenka (11). Simona Halep (4) headlines the other half of this quarter and could face Danielle Collins (26) or Yulia Putintseva in the third round. In the fourth round Halep could face Elise Mertens (16) or Karolina Muchova (20). Halep vs Bencic or Sabalenka would be an intriguing quarterfinal.

The final quarter of the draw features Kristina Pliskova (2) who had an awful first round draw against Kristina Mladenovic. If Pliskova gets through Mladenovic, she could face Anastasija Pavlyuchenkova (30) in the third round and either Angie Kerber (17) or Marketa Vondrousova (15) in the fourth round. The other half of this quarter features Elina Svitolina (5) with a potentials third round match-up with Garbine Muguruza. A potential fourth round matchup against Amanda Anisimova (21) or Kiki Bertens (9) would be interesting for Svitolina. Pliskova vs Svitolina would be a great quarterfinal.

Quarterfinal, Semifinal and Championship Prediction

The first quarterfinal is going to be Ash Barty (1) vs Petra Kvitova (7) with Kvitova making her way through to the semifinals. Naomi Osaka (3) vs Dayana Yastremska (23) will be the next quarterfinal and I like Yastremska to get to the semifinals in Australia.

The third quarterfinal will be Simona Halep (4) vs Aryna Sabalenka (11) with Sabalenka finally having her Grand Slam breakthrough and getting to the semis. Finally, Karolina Pliskova (2) vs Amanda Anisimova (21) with Pliskova getting through to the semifinals.

In the semis I like Petra Kvitova to get by Yastremska and Karolina Pliskova to get by Aryna Sabalenka. At the end of the two weeks I like Karolina Pliskova to finally win her Grand Slam title.
