The semifinals are set and we still have three former Grand Slam champions and an up-and-coming American still left in Melbourne. One semifinal will feature #1 seed, and Australia’s own, Ash Barty vs the 14th seed Sofia Kenin. The second semifinal will feature the #4 seed Simona Halep vs unseeded Garbine Muguruza.
Odds to win Australian Open (via FanDuel Sportsbook)
- Ash Barty +125
- Simona Halep +200
- Garbine Muguruza +440
- Sofia Kenin +700
Ash Barty is the top ranked player in the world and is looking to win her second career Grand Slam title – Barty won the 2019 French Open. Barty’s previous best performance at her home tournament was a quarterfinal appearance last season. The Aussie beat #7 Petra Kvitova 7-6 (6) 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Sofia Kenin is making her first Grand Slam semifinal appearance in just her 12th appearance at one. The American’s previous best Grand Slam result was the fourth round at last year’s French Open. Kenin came into the Aussie Open ranked 16th in the world and will leave Australia no worse than #11 and could climb up to #7 if she wins the whole thing. Kenin beat unseeded Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4 to reach the semifinals.
Ash Barty has won four of the five meetings between these two, but they split their only two encounters on the hardcourts – both last season. It’s not going to be easy, but I like Ash Barty (-260) to make it to the final of the Australian Open.
Simona Halep made light work of the 28th seed, Anett Kontaveit, and advanced to the semifinals in just 54 minutes, winning 6-1 6-1. Halep came into Australia ranked third in the world and will leave ranked second, but the Romanian still has some work to do to catch Ash Barty at the top. Halep is a two-time Grand Slam winner, having won the 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon, and will look to win her first hard court Grand Slam title. Simona Halep was a finalist here in 2018, when she lost to Caroline Wozniacki, and a quarterfinalist back in 2014 and 2015.
Garbine Muguruza is back in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since the 2018 French Open thanks to a hard fought win over the 30th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarters. Muguruza has made three Grand Slam finals appearances, this would be her first on a hardcourt, and is a two-time Grand Slam champions. The Spaniard fell to Serena Williams in the 2015 Wimbledon final, but got her revenge the next year in the final of the 2016 French Open. Muguruza’s last Grand Slam title was 2017 Wimbledon when she easily defeated Venus Williams in the final. Muguruza entered the Aussie Open ranked 32 in the world, but will leave ranked no lower than #20 and can reach #12 if she wins the whole thing.
Each women has won two of the four meetings between the two, but Muguruza has won both meetings on outdoor hardcourts. The Romanian is too good right now, so I like Simona Halep to set up a fantastic win and set up a fantastic Australian Open final.
Ash Barty vs Simona Halep would be an electric final and one that Halep would be extremely confident in. The Romanian is 3-1 against Barty and has won two of the three match-ups on hardcourts. My pick to win the Australian Open is Simona Halep at +200.
