The Milwaukee Bucks’ G league affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, acquired Alex Antetokounmpo through a trade on Monday. His older brothers, Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo play for the Bucks.
To acquire Alex, the Herd sent back the playing rights of Jalen Lecque to the Toronto Raptors G League affiliate, Raptors 905. The trade allowed the team to have a second-round draft pick.
About Alex
Prior to the trade, Alex played for Raptors 905 in the 2021-22 season, in which he made 15 appearances. He recorded an average of 2.6 points and 1.3 rebounds on 50 percent shooting in around 7.8 minutes of each game. In addition to the regular season, he participated in eight showcase games.
The youngest Antetokounmpo attended Dominican High School in Milwaukee. During his education, he played school-level basketball and earned all-state honors twice. After graduating, he decided not to pursue further study and left the United States to play in Europe. He only spent one season there before making his G League debut in 2021.
Giannis was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013-2014 NBA season, acting as the team’s power forward. Giannis earned the NBA MVP title twice and was named 2021 Finals MVP. Giannis earned approximately $39 million in the previous regular season.
Meanwhile, Thanasis joined the Bucks in 2019. He has played the power forward and small forward positions throughout his career. Earlier this year, he opted to continue playing with the team. Thanasis’ contract will have an annual value of $1.9 million by next year.
Unlike his older siblings, Alex has yet to make his NBA debut. However, he participated in the 2022 NBA All-Star Skills Challenge in Cleveland earlier this year. During the event, he teamed up with Giannis and Thanasis in a three-man group.
Alex is not the last of the Antetokounmpo brothers to play basketball professionally. There is Kostas Antetokounmpo, an older brother of Alex.
Kostas played for the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers. However, in recent years, he plays for the French team ASKEL Basket.
The G League will begin its season on November 4 this year. In the previous season, the Herd recorded 17 wins and 29 losses. They ranked five in the G League’s Central Division of the Eastern Conference. Chaisson Allen is the current head coach for the Herd.
There has yet to be an announcement of the full roster of the minor league team. The Herd still has a chance to recruit another player in the second-round draft picks.
Antetokounmpo brothers on one team
During an interview with USA Sports Today a few years ago, Giannis expressed his desire to play alongside all of his brothers in one team. Giannis said his mother would be happy for them to do so.
At that time of the interview, Giannis and Thanasis had already played for the Bucks. Kostas was also still under a contract with the Lakers, and Alex just started playing basketball in the professional league.
At that time, many believed that the chance was slim for the brothers to play together on one team. However, with the news of Alex’s signing, the Antetokounmpo brothers are now one step closer to their dream.
