San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance gave his opinion about the team’s performance. It was during the team’s joint training with Minnesota Vikings that Lance said he found the “rhythm” with other players, especially the wide receivers.
“Playing football, it’s throwing in a way where the defense tells me where to throw the ball,” Lance said. “I just don’t go back and pick a guy. … But, yeah, of course I’m getting the rhythm.”
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that Lance completed 23 out of 25 passing in two practices with Minnesota, with most of his attempts going to tight end George Kittle, and wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Lance said that Samuel performed great in training sessions.
“Just again, the more reps we get together, the more stuff we get to watch together, the better off we’re going to be,” Lance said.
Statistically, Samuel accumulated 1,770 yards received and 14 total touchdowns in the 2021 regular season, with 291 yards received and two touchdowns in NFL playoffs, and was an important player for the 49ers, according to Maiocco.
They built good chemistry, despite both of them only training together for a short time from July 31. On other hand, Aiyuk said that the joint training was a “waste of time”, although he said that it will be useful for Lance’s improvement.
On Saturday, the 49ers will be up against the Vikings in a preseason match at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN.
49ers chance for Super Bowl
Former Patriots OL, Rich Ohrnberger voiced his opinion about the 49ers as a candidate to win the Super Bowl this year by saying that Lance needs to improve his game.
“All he has to be is better than Jimmy Garoppolo for the Niners to be a serious Super Bowl contender,” he said.
Ohrnberger said that Lance was playing better in this preseason than Garoppolo. He asserted that with Lance’s physical figure, especially his bigger arm and his maturation process, Lance will become a serious competitor to secure the first QB position for the 49ers.
“If Trey Lance can be at least as good as Jimmy Garoppolo, they’re a serious playoff contender. If he can be better than Jimmy Garoppolo, which again the bar isn’t being set astronomically high, they are a serious Super Bowl contender assuming health along the other pieces of this roster.”
Former Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty, on ESPN’s Get UP, predicted that the 49ers will make their NFL season campaign to Super Bowl this year.
“They will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. I believe in Trey Lance. More importantly, I believe in Kyle Shanahan getting the most out of the players on this team,” Canty said.
“They have a really good offensive line, a top-five run game, a top-five skill position corps, and a top-five defense. All of the pieces are in place for the 49ers not only to win the division, but actually do damage once they get into the postseason,” he added.
Canty said with Shanahan’s attacking strategy, the 49ers could take advantage of Lance’s abilities, particularly his mobility as a quarterback, although he insisted that even without the 22-year-old’s good form, the 49ers’ offense could win the game.
Moreover, Canty said it was a good run game and good defense that can carry a team in the modern NFL, with Lance’s addition, the 49ers will likely make plays by converting red zone trips into touchdowns and hit on big play opportunities.
